Help With Fuse Box Plugs

Recommended Posts

mowflow

Trying to sort the vipers nest that is my fuse box (the under dash glovebox one) at the moment and would really appreciate some help.

So I think i've got most of the stuff on the board plugged back in following pictures I took before removal of the loom. Everything did work so hopefully it should work again. I've got empty slots on my board (not sure if some were empty before) and I've got plugs left over. Problem, the plugs I have left don't fit or match the colours on the board.

So the pics and the questions:

1. Are these the stereo/radio connectors?

2. There are 2 other plugs that appear to be part of this loom. I can't figure the white plug. I did have the brown one plugged into the fuse board but i think that may have been wrong as i have old pics showing that slot (on the far right of the board) empty

3. I have 3 empty slots on my fuse board and no plugs that match.

Worryingly this one says AC and has a positive symbol. Looks important.

This one is just diagonally in front of the one above and is a little single plug

I'm almost positive that this one has always been empty. I also have that random black plug with the red wire in the photo that seems toppled into nothing

I found an old photo on here of a fuse board labelled with letters and suggestions about corresponding keys/images in the Haynes manual. I don't appear to have this info in my manual. Any pointers on the above would be very much appreciated.

1. Yes they look like the stereo plugs - looks like a lashed in ISO connector for an aftermarket stereo

2. That looks like the heater blower fan (2 pin) and resistor (4/5 pin)

3. That's a switched and positive 12v supply that the stereo connects to (thick blue wire I think from memory)

1. From searching images online I did think it was an ISO connector but there's no sign of it being crudely added. It looks OE which is confusing.

2. Ahhhh. I completely forgot about the heater blower as it's not in the car.

3. What one are you talking about here? Should I have plugs for these or is it a case of that ISO connector has replaced this or do you mean the black plug with the red wire? (I should have split number 3 up)

The red stereo plug is the original Peugeot one and the two ISO plugs have been grafted in afterwards.

I'm talking about the two pin slot on the fuseboard with "AC" and "+" - "AC" is the switched live and "+" is the constant.

(whilst we're on the subject, for anyone with an aftermarket stereo that doesn't switch off with the ignition, chances are that this wire is on the wrong pin and just needs moving over to the "AC" pin)

I can't remember the other two off the top of my head unfortunately.

Got you. Stereo was obviously not factory in this car but it would appear that this wire/plug has been stripped out at some point as I have nothing that plugs in here. At least now i know what it is and can sort it later.

The brown 2pin plug in Pic number 2 being the heater blower actually leaves me with another empty slot on the board now.

The letters on this should tally up with the letters on the Haynes diagrams AFAIK

Yeah, that's the picture I found before. I don't seem to have the Haynes diagram though. I've got loads of wiring schematics in the back of my copy of the manual but I can't make sense of them in relation to the image above.

As Anthony says, the two-pin plug marked AC and + (position U in the pic above) is the power for the radio. The radio will have a single power terminal which can be plugged into either AC or + depending on whether you want power to the radio with the key in the accessory position, or all the time.

The single terminal in front of it (pos Y) is normally unused. It's the power feed for heated mirrors. It gets 12V when you turn the heated rear window on.

The 3-pin one at the front (pos X) is normally unused as well. It's connected to the empty relay socket below-right of it. No idea what it's meant for, possibly the power feed to a towbar?

This is the diagram missing from the Haynes manual. It's the same as the photo. If you look at the wiring diagrams then the connections to the fusebox have a letter next to them which correspond to the letters on the diagram, and the numbers correspond to the individual pin numbers of that plug.

The Haynes diagrams are a bit iffy to be honest. They're for a very early phase 1 and can be slightly different from how most GTIs are wired.

Very very greatful to both of you for taking the time to help me with this.

Now I know how to work the diagrams in the Haynes I should be able to check what goes into position N as I originally had the brown heater fan plugged in here. Give a man a fishing rod and all that.

The Hatnes wiring diagrams will be an additional help as they have the pin positions, wire numbers, functions and are labelled as above for the diagram provided by Anthony and Ryan.

As for the fuseboard itself, you've probably noticed by now anyway, but just about everything on there plugs into one place only.

Yeah, I noticed the coloured dots and the fact all the multiples have different slots on the bottom edge helped greatly. The only one that I found could be confused was that white plug i have in pic 2 above. It fits a slot on the board right at the back. However, I found there was also a 5 pin white plug on the loom coming through the bulkhead which was so short it could only plug into that same position.

I hope to get some time this weekend to put parts of the dash back in to help finalise some of the left over plugs. Dials, heater fan, heater controls, ECU, steering column etc. SO I may well be back with a load of new photos on Monday

Just to try to help round this thread off for anyone that searches. I have found some pics of Mrfirepro's fusebox on his photobucket account and it seems he has the same empty slots as myself (front far left slot for a brown 4 pin and position Y on the diagram above which fits a single pin).

Also noted he seems to have a bar across the back of his fuse board which holds all the wires down nice and tidy.
