The original dampers I've just removed from my 1988 1600 simply have 'peugeot' stamped on the casing.

yup, Peugeot made them, even the ones on my zx were stamped peugeot

That WAS one of the really good things about Peugeot, they made there own shocks. If you've seen the Top Gear episode, you'll know when they stopped making them.

I *think* Peugeot still make dampers for some of their cars (Not all of them like they used too!). As said, they were considered the gold standard amongst manufacturers, I remember reading an article about the new Mondeo a few years ago which stated that Ford investigated using Peugeot to spec and manufacture the dampers for the Mondeo as they were considered the best, but didn't eventually due to the cost!
