Viewing/buying Cars Can Be Annoying Can't It!

To be honest, I wouldn't touch that car with a bargepole without a comprehensive inspection. If that comes up all good then drive it home and get the work done.

I wrote the guy an email suggesting an inspection at my cost and finished with “If this is not possible then I’m not comfortable with the purchase as it raises questions as to why you wouldn’t want it looked at. If that is the case then I will thank you again for your time and will look elsewhere”

Polite and non moody I think, he replied with "I don't think we are going to be able to strike a deal, lets not waste eachothers time. Good luck with your search"

It's fairly common to have inspections carried out on cars like these, it does make me wonder why he is so hesitant.

It's not like I'm a time waster either, given the round trip I made to view the car in the first place.

If he won't have it inspected then defo sounds like he's hiding something. Forget it and search elsewhere.

His loss, I wouldn't buy from this clown on principle. Another one will come up and be nearer, chalk it up to another dreamer seller.

Yeah I second that, don't waste more time and money on him...... a better car will come along as they always do and you will feel far more comfortable with the deal.

Although it's not generally the "done thing" but once I've spoken to a seller and gauged that they're ledgible I just tell them directly that my budget is £X amount (normally very close to the asking price) and inform them that this is what I can pay on the day provided the car is as described, if they're cool with then it's all good. Living in Scotland means lengthy drives and I don't fancy taking any chances. It has always worked for me and removes the awkwardness of haggling in person to be honest. Feels much more direct and they know where you stand beforehand.

What type of S1 Elise are you looking at? I used to own a lightly modified S1 Elise, got to be honest the lack of grunt above 3rd gear eventually killed the experience for me. Ended up wishing I bought an S160 or some Bell & Colvill variant. This was years ago mind and the current prices of these cars are eye watering compared to 10 years ago.

Buyer beware.

But don't forget.. Seller beware also counts for something.

Or he just wants a quiet life.

These inspections are probably similar to property one in as such as they cover their arse to a great degree by being vague.

Would agree with you. You get a "feel" when dealing with people and from what you've said, the alarm bells are going off with this one - for example a quick surf reveals cam belt change is 4 years...
