Thinking Of Using Another Car For Daily Driver

Recommended Posts

davey205

Iv'e never insured 2 cars at once before but due to my circumstances I don't feel comfortable keeping the 205 parked on the road ( in 12 weeks vandalism and reversed into and general crappy area ) so was thinking about having it as a 2nd car at another address.

Who are people insured with and some prices to give me an idea would be good, I've spent all this time and money getting the 205 back on the road and now its being ruined by sheer sod***n*ss.

Get a multi-car policy, I have had one in the past with Admiral, sure there's other companies that offer it as well now.

Your other option is get a Classic policy for your 205 and use your 'normal' policy for your daily driver.

Definitely get a multicar or you won't be able to use your no claims on your 2nd policy so it might be expensive depending on age etc

I've looked at multi car policies several times in the past and they've always ended up more expensive than individual policies.

You don't say who insures it at the moment. Get a quote from the same place and mention you already have a policy with them. Every time I've done this I've got an introductory discount equivalent to the NCB on the other policy.

FWIW, I find Flux to be very good.

I got a policy from Brentacre in Cardif, with agreed value. They mirrored my other cars NCD (from a different company) and think i'm only £250 ish fully comp.

Only thing is i cant earn NCD on the 205's policy.

I've got 4

205 - Greenlight

306 HDI - Admiral

1 series - Direct Line

M3 - Sky Insurance

I did originally have the 3 cars excluding the 205 on Admiral's Multicar Policy but it actually ended up working out dearer than insuring the others and having mirrored NCB. I mean, you can only drive one car at a time, right? So they take that into account

Current spent:

205 - £270/yr, modified, agreed value

306 HDi - £400/yr

1 series - £500/yr

M3 - £450/yr

I was insured with Brentacre for a long time and found them very good, but once I started having standard cars they couldn't get near my prices so had no choice but to jump ship

I had my Merc CL55 AMG insured with Flux and they basically forced me into paying the remainder of the policy when I cancelled it despite when I took it out and asking that very question they pretty much said I was fine to cancel. Bad experience, doubt I'll use them again

I'm with 1st central, I changed insurance to other car today and sorned the 205 will be looking into decent insurance with agreed value if possible, low excess and possibly limited mileage as it will now only be used for special occasions perhaps the odd show here and there and Sunday lunches.

1st central do a £100 off insuring a 2nd car but I want her to be well insured not written off for a dented panel so will probably be looking into alternatives...... failing that will look into a multicar policy when current lapses.

My Mi16 costs me 169 quid fully comp, all mods declared with an agreed value of 3k. Milage limited to 3k per year with the option of extending should I require. Footman James are who I'm with. Also offer driving other classics over 20 years old with owners permission, obviously, for just a tenner per year.

I use multicar (Admiral at the moment I think, but previously Aviva). It's worked out cheaper for me over the past few years, and you can build up NCB on both cars. In the past I've had separate policies, and got the second insurer to 'mirror' by NCB on the other car - did this through A-Plan last time.

That said, my current multicar policy doesn't include the 205, as it was cheaper to separately insure it on a classic policy (approx £130 I think!).

I use HIC for my 205, about £400 all declared, and flux for my vanew which again is about £400. I recommend HIC, been with them for years. However flux are a headache to deal with, but seem ti be cheap.

I've got my cars with A-Plan - Mirrored NCD on the TVR, so it's actually quite low. Works out at about £300 a piece.

Used A-Plan on and off for a bit and found them to be quite easy to deal with. Been a busy year, so I'll be a bit more on the ball next year looking at my options.

It's a bit of a pain. Got all on seperate policies as it's cheaper that way but I never seem to pass a month without having to shop around.

I use another car as a daily driver......a 205 diesel and i love it! I find that keeping them both on seperate policies is cheaper but at the moment i've no gti on the road so i only pay £190 a year for the diesel.

Having two of the same car has the drawback of neither being more useful than the other, aside from being a 5 door, but the benefit of spares/experience being largely applicable to both cars.

I think it very much depends on the circumstances. We insure my 535d, the wifes Mini Cooper S, and our joint Shogun 3.2DiD for £950 a year. Last time I checked that was significanly cheaper than us insuring those vehicles separately. My 205(s) are these days only used for very limited mileage, so its cheaper to insure those in their own right, my standard 1.6 GTI was £132 fully comp this year.
