Standard Exhaust

Recommended Posts

Mongoose

Hello, my GTI is back on the road after eight years. I'm finding its exhaust far too noisy and would like it returning to standard.

Today is my birthday so I'm feeling optimistic; can anyone recommend a supplier in the South Manchester/Cheshire area who would be able to supply and - this is important - properly fit (ie no vibrating heat guards) an exhaust?

Think the ones from motor factors aren't too bad, buy parts by do a full set for under 100quid minus delivery iirc

BuyPartsBy (Sutton Auto Factors) do the Klarius one as said above. Bit noisier than the original standard exhaust but not too bad. Not sure what they have fitting kit wise as I bought their last remaining single parts of the kit about a month or so ago...they do keep restocking but not sure how quickly/slowly.

A walker system is quite good as well

Thanks for the responses. I want to keep the noise to a minimum - would the Walker system (or others) be similar to an original?

The Walker I fitted was a perfect fit and sounds okay.

Even at a minimum the 205 GTI is quite noisy at best. Klarius is alright and probably the most easily obtained. If you can find a Bosal (pretty sure they're the same company as Klarius now) for similar money then go with that. No experience of Walker personally. If cost isn't an issue then there's always the option of having one made up to your requirements by a specialist.

I have seen Hoffman exhausts for the 205 but my experience of that with a 1.7 Zetec engine was that they can be quite loud.

Had a Klarius, won't bother again. Seemed cheapo steel, rotted quickly and the back box internals collapsed within a year.

Swapped to a Walker exhaust and it's been much better. Better sound and the hangers all lined up perfectly.

I have Walker on one 205 and its better made than the klarius on another.

My girlfriends 205 has a Bosal, better than klarius.

I fit a few exhausts on various vehicles, many are klarius from eurocarparts/carparts4less, they are cheap and fit.

They dont seem very well painted and soon start rusting

But for myself and other folk who dont want the cheapest, Walker.

misterauto do walker online and often have a discount code.

Bosal and Walker sound about the same, klarius seem a little bit louder.

Klarius are what used to be Timax, Bosal are a different company and better quality.

Off topic but where in Stockport are you? I've probably asked you already. I'm in Stockport and also about to get my 205 on the road. You'll have to let me know what days you're taking yours out, and we'll work a rota out, as we can't have two in the same town on the same day, that would just be rude :P:D

I will add that while I have a Klarius exhaust, that's only the downpipe to rear box...has been fine for over a year with no corrosion so I guess they can be hit and miss.

My rear box is the Bosal which was on the car when I got it as it was perfectly fine.

I have a Klarius back box on my car, it's not a great fit at all and as a result it's melted the rear valance in one place. As a result of this thread i have ordered a Bosal from Mister Auto. Reason being the picture showed it as being the correct cylindrical shape rather than an oval.

Not speificly a 205, just to relate a recent exhaust experience.

I fitted two complete exhausts to two identical nissan micras, both 52 reg 1.0

We were swapping my mum to an auto as she has left wrist problems,so i was prepping her old manual car to sell and her new auto car to keep

one had a complete klarius system, the other had a mix of a walker middle pipe and bosal rear silencer and a bosal downpipe.

The klarius fitted first time nice and quick.

The much more expensive mix of Bosal and Walker was a PITA and had to be cut and welded in 2 places.

So dont mix and match go for all the same brand.

Maybe Toms experience with the Klarius silencer was a result of mismatched parts?

I definetly think the klarius wasn`t as well made or finished though

Thanks again for the replies.

Someone asked where I was: I'm just outside Stockport - you'll probably see the car as I'm certain that of the apparent 1500 roadworthy cars (which seems awfully low to me?) mine is the scruffiest. When it roared off the production line twenty-four years ago it was a gleaming graphite grey. I'm afraid a more accurate description these days would be "washed-up dead seal." It badly needs paint which I can't afford to do at the moment. I'm not letting that stop me though; the car gets used almost every day.

Sounds like the Walker system is the one to go for. My back box is starting to eat the rear valance. Can anyone recommend an exhaust fitting place - I want it secure, not banging around and no niggly little vibrations?

Cheers.

Just to comment, my car at present has a complete Klarius system, front section and back box.

To be honest, if you have space, axle stands and some regular tools you can do it yourself relatively easily. Only tricky part is the gasket and fitting kit (particularly seized nuts on the bolts). Lube the nuts up generously and they should come off...if not then cut through the spring and bolt and replace them. I had a bit of a mare when doing mine and when I took it to a garage they just made a complete dog's dinner of it.

Tom i just had a quick look and the Bosal silencer is cylindrical, it was from mister auto.

Bosal have a 2mm hole in the lowest point of the silencer, to allow drainage of condensate.

The first time i noticed on a bosal exhaust i thought it was a manufacturing fault.

Klarius here, not impressed. First backbox blew wide open and second one is rusting already after a year and 2500 miles

Back box blowing open isn't really the fault of the exhaust. More so the engine overfuelling then a backfire. My old 405Mi16 once did the same thing.

Mr brother had a Klaruis back box on his Yaris from Euro, split right down the side after 3 months on the car.

If you knew me, you would trust me with a spanner about as much as you'd trust a Greek bank with your wages.

I'm looking for a fitter and ideally an independent one; I'm possibly being unfair here but I have very little faith in the big, national companies.

Haha not to worry. Only suggestion I would have, as I no longer live in Manchester, is a guy who runs a tyre place outside Middleton...he may do it and not charge much but it's a bit overkill if you're in Stockport.

Klarus one i have on rusting after less than 5k miles, and it's never seen the rain...... and even lost the the exhaust hanger bracket from it one day...... Their welding is poor imo.

A two year old walker one i had prior is still rust free in my garage.

(Only changed the back box to suit a different middle pipe i had with an olive fitting thing.)

I also have a Klariuis backbox and it started looking like a 10 year old exhaust within a year despite minimal use on the road. I ordered mines via carparts4free and the main body came through bashed, I had to chop the deformed exhaust tip back as well. In its defence the Klarius is functioning fine, it's still nice and silent with no boomy resonance. I'm going for a Walker or Bosal next since they don't show surface corrosion as quickly as the Klarius and I'll be using a different vendor.
