Building A 205 Gti Dilema

Recommended Posts

hcmini1989

Right I currently have a 205 I have be gathering parts for for a while now (3-4 years ish) ,Now I have come to a point where I am at a cross roads the shell is complete its an old rally shell that's been repainted (full weld in cage) all the steering and suspension has been upgraded overhauled etc .

But im at the point of building an engine I have an s16 block custom pistons xud crank and have been putting some pennies away each payday to get some cams from petert and building the engine to push 230-240 bhp with aftermarket management ITBs etc .But this is taking a substantial amount of time saving up for .

And I keep seeing engine conversion packages from gti6s for sale for $400-600 with everything needed to get up and running so what would to do .Ive been tempted for a while but I have just had one come up for sale on my doorstep wich looks really inviting but again is just a bog standard set up

Im unsure what to do with the car once its all done as its really not fit for anything other than competition/track use .hence why im unsure about a standard engine .

Edit-by the way hope this is the right section if not could one of the moderators please move

cheers

Decide how you are going to use the car and build one for that spec.

If you are going to do competition, build it to the Blue Book regs otherwise it will be up against more highly modified cars.

If you are going to do track days, decide how many of these you will actually do and is it better spending money on enjoying more trackdays rather than a monster spec and less track time.

Personally, I like a fast road car as there are some good roads near me and every day is a track day if the sun is out and it is a lot cheaper.

Get it running on a cheap standard engine and then decide if you need much more power. A diff would transform the car and also be of use if you upgrade. You can then build your monster spec engine at your leisure if you want and still be able to enjoy the car.

People often make the mistake of wanting to build the ultimate 205 and the spec never gets much further than their signature on here and then a for sale thread of the parts :(

This 100%

Get it done and get out there, it will probably be faster and more capable than you are to begin with anyway.

I have been doing trackdays for 10 years in my 205, with a standard Mi16 motor. The car had got faster and faster mainly due to suspension brakes and driver improvements.

Everything Henry said... and...

You'll be lucky if you can count on one hand the number of people on this forum or any other for that matter that can drive a bog standard 1.9 205 Gti at the limit of the car, never mind a modified one... remember most of all it's a driver's car...

Build it, use it and learn to drive first... so much to learn, heel and toe, left foot braking, how to balance a car... the 8v is capable of 130mph and 160bhp for around 800kg... more than a match for the average driver... which 99.9% of us are anyway. Throw away the typical male ego and learn to drive in the first place with a balanced, well put together car, that is my advice.

Buy that gti6 engine in for sale with longmans head and get it plumbed in and running, you'll drive it and grin your chebs off.

Unless as said your racing it. But that will have enough power to keep you happy on the road

Personally wouldnt touch a longmans engine. The only info ive seen about a longmans in past 2 years is them dropping valves, certainly wouldnt be where Id throw my money

Yeah I saw a few heads on gti6 oc with damage from dropping valves, didn't know it was a problem with the heads tho just thought maybe exuberant driving. Sure they'd be fine with standard rev limit?

As everyone has already said, a well setup 205 with even standard '6 power will be great fun, i ran an Mi which was standard barring a peter t inlet for years as a stripped out track car and like Tom says, the car got quicker as i got better and learnt how to tweak the suspension to suit my needs.. The car is now back to fully road trimmed with a stock '6 motor and is still great fun!

Get it built, and on the road. Improve it from there as and when funds allow. :)

My 306 rallye has a longmans built + modified engine in it and it's perfect.

The only 2 longmans cylinder heads with damaged chambers I've seen were down to tensioner failures.
