Diff Casing Won't Fit (Crown Wheel Or Diff?)

Recommended Posts

lemmingzappa

I attempted to re-seal and bolt up the diff cover on a 1.9 box I have but I just can't get the casing to close all the way (its rocking in the middle like a see-saw, with a 5mm gap)!

The bearings seem to sit fine in both the box and cover end, but no matter which way around I mount the crown wheel on the diff it still won't close.

If I fit the diff to the box without the crown wheel then the casing will close up fine. I've been told that the diff which came supplied with the box is possibly for a GTi6.

Any ideas!?

Is that the correct cover? It's missing the bit that the dowel locates on isn't it? Or is it an early box and they're different?

Have you simply taken it to bits and put it back together with the only change being the diff? Is it the correct crownwheel or a gti6 one?

I'll be honest I'm not sure if it's an early or later box. When I bought it the casing was already half open (the previous owner had removed a quaife diff at some point) so I decided to go ahead and get it all sealed and bolted up properly.

Regarding the crown wheel, again I couldn't tell you if it's a GTi6 one, unfortunately I don't have much experience with boxes.

I can't confirm that. Previous owner thought so but they could be incorrect considering how long ago this box was used.

Will try and find out more. If it's wrong, time to find another 1.9 box >.<

Josh got this gearbox from me. From what I remember I took a Quaife out of it and replaced it with a standard diff from another gearbox. The crownwheels and covers stayed with their respective gearboxes and I loosely bolted the cover back on.

I said to Josh last night that I thought I might have put a diff from a 6 speed in there but now I think about it some more that was a different car and this diff is also from a 5 speed.

from memory the crownwheel is bolted on the other side of the larger diffs, not that it makes sny difference.

what numbers are on that crownwheel?

That's an Mi16 FD which is obviously wrong, I have no idea how it has ended up in there...

Is the final drive the same thing as a crown wheel?

Don't suppose you're likely to have the correct wheel in storage?

The final drive is the combination of the crown wheel and the pinion that drives it, they need to match each other.

If I have the correct crownwheel it is in another gearbox, I'm worried that the almost complete 205 on my driveway has a mismatched FD now. I'm not sure how it could have happened though, it was literally six or seven years ago that I swapped them over but I was definitely aware of the need to keep the crownwheels and diff casings with their original gearboxes.

Well I'm happy to do a swap if you manage to trace it somehow.

Do you happen to have any other 1.9 boxes for sale?

I have one gearbox left (a BE1) but I don't know the ratios without taking it apart.
