Refitting Pistons To Rods - Heat Needed ?

I have removed the 1.9 pistons from my rods and will be fitting the good 1.6 pistons shortly . I am aware that the little end of the rod is normally heated to aid refitting , the gudgeon pins were a very tight fit and would like to make sure I get it right .Would heating with a gas torch or similar be sufficient , what sort of temperature do I need to heat it to , I have a laser thermometer gun .

I have just removed 12 pistons from their rods , started doing it in a vice but its too much hard work so used my 10 ton hydraulic press for the last 8 . Set up the piston on a pair of steel parallels so the gudgeon pin could be pushed through between them . I turned up a piece of 18mm dia copper bar with a step on the front to centre in the hole thru the wrist pin and used that to push them out .

I am pretty sure I could refit them ok as the whole piston flat can be supported on a parallel and the pin pushed in till it hits a stop .Was concerned about the pin getting started square into the little end of the rod , and the temperature needed for the little end to 'grow' enough to get it started . Will obviously chill the pin as well .

I took mine to a local remanufacters to have the refitted when I put some 1.6 pistons onto 1.9 rods, cost £25 iirc & they were done in a day.

 

I've got the Peugeot guide somewhere in pdf, I'm sure it was on here somewhere posted by Dr Sarty.

 

Heat the rods in an oven with a small piece of solder on the rod by the little end, when the solder melts the rods are hot enough to push the pin back through but obviously this needs to be done pretty quickly before the rods cool too much & as Damir says, it's pretty tricky at home.
