90 Amp Alternator

Recommended Posts

Oigen

Hi,

I want to upgrade the alternator with a 90 AMP one. Anyone know which one will fit on the mi16 block without too many modifications?

Regards,

Dan

I have to ask, why do you need so much instant current in a 205?

I see in servicebox that mi16 with A/C uses 80 AMP alternator. The 80 AMP one is manufactured only by Mitsubishi and I know they are not very reliable. 90 AMP ones are manufactured by Valeo and Bosch, and for these ones I can find very easy spare parts.

Now I have a 70 AMP one from a diesel, but in the hot days when I use A/C and headlights, seems that is a little too much for it.

Headlights draw 20 amps? A/C 5 amps? There's still a long way to go, even with wipers on, taillights etc.

The Mitsubishi ones are supposed to be the best, thats why Peugeot/Citroen state they must "imperatively" be used on xu9j4's when the original fails, same with the starter motors. See the Peugeot note at the top of this page; http://i.imgur.com/A5hOdQo.jpg

I will add that i've been using a Valeo 70amp one for a very long time (~10 years) and its been fine in 3 different cars!

A/C in city turns on the fans on second stage very often. That means 33 amps plus interior heater fan

So, back to the topic title, which 90 AMP alternator will fit directly on mi16?

Sounds like you have a separate issue. Normally the cooling fans only go to 2nd stage in a bad situation. With the A/C on, the cooling fans should be on low speed all the time. This is usually adequate to keep the engine cool, even when stationary on a very hot day.

Thank you for the info Henry Yorke

In traffic at 30-33 degrees I don't think that fans will work only on low speed with A/C on. I simply don't belive this :)

1st speed on 98, off 93

2nd speed on 102, off 97

30-33 is a normal summer's day over here. Single speed all the time.

With A/C off my car does exactly the same, but when the A/C is on the fans are controlled by thermo switch(on radiator) and pressure switch(on drier), so even if the water is 50 degrees the fans can run on second stage if the pressure will raise.

Is it your A/C system functional?

I don't think my fans run when the aircon is on and the radiator is cool, but I will try and check later.

I tested tonight and yes my fans come on with the aircon being on. I've learned something tonight!!!
