What Phase Is My Car?

Recommended Posts

Ramigojag

I'm hoping someone with more knowledge than me will be able to help.

When I bought the car it had the later (I think) darker rear lenses and clear front indicators and the black interior.

It was registered November '90

However flicking back through old PH SOTW articles there is this one:

http://www.pistonheads.com/regulars/ph-features-sheds/sotw-peugeot-205-gti-1-6/26567

This I believe is a twin of my car as my plate is H464 XYX and the one in the article is H477 XYX however that one is a '91 and it has the older rear lenses and amber front indicators.

Has someone at some point "facelifted" my car do you think?

Thanks

90/91 is the changeover year so you often find models from these years with a combination of parts from ph1 and ph2. Some had the be1 box others the be3, different combos of seats, lights, dash colour etc so i wouldn't worry. I would say the car in the ad was a 90, rather than a 91 as it has grey exterior trim and dash by the look of it.

I only say '91 because i put the reg in on ECP website and it comes up as a 91 whereas mine comes up 90

It quite possibly is a 91' car but generally speaking 91' cars are full phase 2, later box, seats and all black trim etc, whereas 90' cars seem to be a mixture.

Not sure how accurate that info is. It claims the 205 had illuminated window switches from Aug 89, and that the warning buzzer for the lights wasn't fitted until October 91.

Very good chance that someone added the phase 2 rear lights and indicators but, as said, some came from factory during the changeover. One obvious way of knowing which would be if the reverse light is phase 2 and works...often people would convert to phase 2 but not bother with reverse. Mine came like this and was changed back...annoying really as I the phase 2 lights were in perfect condition but I had to cut one off.

Other things to determine it in order to get the correct parts in the future is check which exhaust is fitted and see whether you have a BE1 or BE3. Dash and trim should be obvious to you. If you have a BE1, grey trim and the two-piece exhaust with olive rear box then you can safely assume it's a 1.5.

Exhaust and gearbox were changed in mid-1989, so a 1990 should be a BE3 with a 2-piece exhaust anyway, even if it were a phase 1.5.

Mine is also a Nov 1990 car and it's a real mix of parts. Cosmetically it's all phase 2 - black dash and trim, clear indicators, ph2 rear lights etc, and doesn't look like it was changed by a previous owner. But more or less everything else is phase 1.5.

I've forgotten which gearbox is which bit my reverse is to the right and back and I have the two piece exhaust system.

What's different about the ph2 reverse light? I haven't heard about that one

The phase 2s have the reverse light down below the bumper. One side is the reverse light, the other is the rear fog.

Phase 1/1.5s have a fog light and a reflector, and the reverse lights are part of the main rear light units.

Granted, but as scbond said it's quite an extent to go to whilst face lifting including fitting all the later black interior, so im assuming they were factory fitted

I had a H reg 1.6..

It and the later phase dash and interior but earlier exterior trim, badges and lights. It was a was a real mix mash.

Ok, so it seems around this age they were all a bit of a mix match.

I will leave mine as is because I like the way it looks and I will change it if someone can show me proof mine came out of the factory looking different.

Thanks for the info. as always there is so much information and knowledge on this forum I would be lost without it.

The problem with buying a 25 year old car is that parts will have been changed and unless you have a folder full of receipts that the previous owners kept, it may have been altered some what. Get a brochure for that time period and cross reference it against the build date with your 205 and you will have your spec.

It isn't common to see phase 1.5 cars registered in 91 but I could happen if it was registered late for some reason. I expect yours is original but my car was registered at the end of November 1990 and it's a phase 1.5
