Are These Big End Bearings Oem Or Aftermarket?

Recommended Posts

wicked

I removed the sump of my 2.0 TCT to inspect the big end bearings and they were not in really good shape anymore.

I googled on the numbers, but cannot find any spec of it. Are these the original ones? (Don't know the full history of the engine).

Meanwhile I ordered already Glyco 71-4279/4 STD bearings, but start to doubt if the -FM 3 60 stands for an oversized bearing (after regrind). Haven't measured the crank, but will do that this weekend.

Pretty sure they're the std. ones ... oversized shells are marked with 0.10 / 0.20 / 0.30 and if ground for oversized shells the crank should have machinist markings near the journals .

I've seen these ones before on a few PSA engines , suppose FM stands for 'Federal Mogul' which could be OE repacked brand for PSA at that time .. the rest of the numbering is just a part ID code .

But to be 100% sure better measure the crank .. as there could be also an mix of one std. and one oversized shell per each or individual journal (in order to get the clearances right)

I checked thickness and clearance and they are standard size. Probably OEM stuff, since there is no STD on it, what I did expect on standard size shells.

I found that the Glyco 71-4279/4 STD, which are the correct ones according the Glyco catalog, are wider than the OEM; Glyco: 21.95mm vs ~20mm OEM. The edge of the bearings is almost flush with the conrod on 1 side... So I'm a bit puzzled now if these bearings are correct and I don't run into problems if I proceed....

Should be fine, crank journal is about 24mm iirc

Due to the little notch they sit off-centre, so margin is less than 1mm.

Meanwhile I ordered the Glyco 01-4298/STD, the bearing that is listed for S16/GTI6 etc. They have the correct width. Just for peace of mind.

The 71-4279/4 STD btw is also listed for T16 engines and 2.1TD, and the T16 has wider journals. (no idea about 2.1TD)

Use the wider bearings if you can do so safely but check very carefully against fillets on the crank between the journal and the webbing as you don't want to build edge loading into it. Wider bearings mean more surface area, means less load into the bearing material, means longer life.
