I have a tiny leak coming from where the speedo housing sits on the gearbox. So removed the speedo housing today in order to replace the o ring and also driveshaft seal while its off. With the housing on the bench this popped out

Any ideas as to what it is and its purpose?

Sat in the speedo drive housing , the side that bolts to the diff cover. It's a perfect od for the casing and was a snug fit I gave it a little push from the other side and it just popped out

For reference it's a ab Motorsport built short ratio box. Just can't work out what it's purpose could be?

Well if you don't know I'm stuffed lol.

so normally there's nothing there just the driveshaft seal on the smaller end and the o ring on the larger end (which I had leaking)

It doesn't even interfere with the plastic drive as that is centralised by it sitting on the diff so very odd the only reason I touched it is because it had a tiny dent in it so was tapping it to straiten it out a little and it just fell out otherwise I probably wouldn't of payed it any attention.

Weird, I've had that off when I had it and never even noticed it to be honest!

Bin it!

Kinda looks like the part marked 'NFP' in this diagram; http://i.imgur.com/1i55byl.png

Has the same offset centre anyway but i've never seen one myself.

One of my 1.6 be3 boxes had one of those- I was equally confused! Ended up binning it as it had got slightly damaged and was stopping the speedo drive seating properly
