Nut, Bolt, Brakets And The Like Plating

Recommended Posts

hi guys as some of you may know im doing a restoration project.

what im doing is deox c 'ing nuts, bolts etc. then wire wheeling the rest of muck off.

as you can imagine there's lots of components i need to do, which is taking alot of my time up!, yet i want it to be the best finish possible.

question is how much pre work is needed?

im talking about about parts i need to be plated, painted, and powder coated.

current parts include, rust, paint, thread lock compounds and parts that are allready plated gold.

im interested in the procces to what it takes to do these processes.

also nut and bolt plating is it zinc plating? can you have a more silver finish than the common gold?

thanks matt.

I have access at work to a small sand blaster with very fine sand in, it's ideal for nuts bolts small bracketry etc.

i do too, its the time it take to do it thats the problem, if i was to take parts to people that do these processing do they do what im doing already? is it worth it? my time on prep to what your paying for someone else to do it?

obviously the more you put into the prep work the better the end product. but the thing is, you can take as much time on stuff like this as you can on jobs like paint work. its taking me a long time.

For all the nuts/bolts and brackets I used electroplate (tel 01502 470045) I think the guy I dealt with was Chris???

I have sent several loads to these guys all corroded and caked in oil (no prep by me at all) the finished product they sent back was really good and at a great price.

I wanted the yellow finish but I think they can do a standard silver finish as well.

I used 3 different platers in the end, depending on which was most convenient at the time, all of which did all the stripping for you - even the stuff you've already stripped they'll do again I suspect. Same with the powdercoaters I used.

I used Electroplate UK for one batch and while cheap and convenient, the finish was definitely the worst of the 3 I used and a few parts needing doing again, so it might be worth seeing if you can find someone local. I don't know if they take posted parts but of the ones I used, I found Nun Street Plating (Derby) to be the best on a price vs quality basis.

Cool stuff so no need really to clean up and bolts.

How about removing paint from parts to be powder coated?

They'll just blast prior to powder coating in my experience.
