Engine Rebuild

Recommended Posts

Reidy1747

I recently got my hands on the father inlaws 205 gti after it being sat in his garage for 15 years begging to be brought back out! However he parked it up because he had a head gasket replaced and after a trip out noticed the oul pressure and temp gauges wasnt working then on return they both shot to life and went off the scale so he panicked got towed home and parked it up and thats where it stayed until now.But he started to play with the engine and attempted to strip it down but got fed up part way through, does anybody know any reliable sources who could refurb the engine for me? I want it to be the original engine due to it being so original and very good condition also one owner from new so dont want to be putting a new/different engines in etc

depending how far it has been stripped down, I would be inclined to re-assemble after checking the wiring over thoroughly, it sounds like the wires just shorted to earth than a major catastrophe related to the engine itself.

Yes i agree totally he basically stripped the wiring and pipework off,the engine is all intact he didnt remove the head or cambelt etc but im sure there are bits missing off it but will require a complete strip down and refurb it has only done 80,000 miles with a full Peugeot service history until it was parked up so it was looked after.

How long has it been sat around? Did it have correctly mixed coolant in it?

If its been immobile for years it may have corrosion etc internally, if it was me I'd change the oil and coolant, stick a new cam belt on it and see how it runs. Probably need to give the whole car a thorough check over brakes, fluids etc.

There's loads of help available here- if your unsure ask and post some pictures if required!

Hi thanks for that,

It was sat for 15 years in his garage but he left the plugs out for some reason. The engine turns over freely by hand which is a good start but id like it going through for peace of mind.id do it myself just limited time.ive gone through the car from top to bottom and just requires the usual wear and tear components replacing like the brakes etc that you mentioned and a few very minor surface rust patches sorting out i will post some pictures as soon as possible.

80k about right for head gasket change. Persevere with it. The problem will often be something minor.
