Which Sump?

Recommended Posts

benny205mi16

Hi,

I now have two sumps, but I am unsure which to fit.

1 is finned and 1 is smooth so I was thinking finned to help with cooling, but the smooth one had a large hose fitting on the side and the finned does not.

Can anyone help with which sumps I have and which I should be using?

I am building an alloy mi16.

Thank you

Ben

As original fitment for the Mi16 you want the finned alloy one imo (although the same engine from the BX had a steel sump iirc), no idea what the large hose fitting on the smooth one is though.

Finned is Mi16, but the other sounds like an A/C 8V sump. I think you'll find it's deeper than the Mi16 sump, if it's the one I think it is.

If you're likely to be running it on track then I'd consider getting hold of an XU10 baffled sump (e.g. GTI6 sump) and then extending the oil pump pick-up to take advantage of the extra capacity - petert can supply the pump extension pieces.

This reduced oil surge on my MI16 considerably.

Thank you for the replies,

It will only be used as a road car, but I do have a "egg box" sump baffle to fit, and I am up rating the oil pump spring.

I will read the sticky about posting photos and will then post one of the unknown sump, as "a picture speaks a thousand words"

Thanks

Ben

I've used the standard finned sump with a eggbox baffle and a gti6 oil pump (equivalent to your uprated spring) with the chain guard and it definitely helped to reduce surge in my mi16....didn't prevent it though, but nothing less than a dry sump setup would do that!

Hi,

I hope this puts up a photo of the unknown sump,

And the other which I believe is a Mi16 sump

The dirty one fits an Mi16, as I have just removed it from the engine and the "unknown" sump also fits as I had already fitted it to the Mi I am currently rebuilding. Both clear the oil pump, although I did have some issues with the baffle I am fitting catching the pump pick up and the internal fins on the dirty sump, but this could be down to the baffle and nothing to do with the sumps at all.

Thanks

Ben

S@m,

What is this chain guard you have fitted?

Thanks

As I said, it's an A/C 8V sump that someone has ground the compressor mounts off. I love using these for race applications as I can make the internal baffle wall much higher than the GTi6 sump, then shape it so it snuggly fits the shape of the windage tray. Rare beasty indeed.

is the spigot a relocated oil filler due to space constraints in an A-C engine bay when PAS Alternator A-C and a heat exchanger takeoff all in the tight space under the 8v inlet?

It's not a 205 sump however, BX I think. There are two other versions of the same. One has no filler neck at all (205) and the other has a bolt on cover plate in the filler neck location.

The chain guard and fabled "uprated" spring are standard fitment on GTI6 (and other xu10) oil pumps. The mi16 (and other xu9) oil pumps don't have the mounting holes for it.

I just so happen to have one of those sumps on my spare 8v engine which came from an aircon car. Will be sure to either use it or sell it!

Fairly certain that sump is also in the scudo/expert/ulysee/dispatch style vans with a separate oil filler neck due to the head being under the bulkhead of the van.
