Phase 2 Gti Expansion Bottle Cap.

Recommended Posts

Hello, I have a phase two 205 gti with a alloy blocked mi16 engine. I've noticed while Sat or doing about 30 mph the engine temp going off the dashboard goes to the forth bar. A bit after that 4 bar mark the fan cuts in. Today I went for a drive, again the temp was just over the forth bar which I belive is normal, and checked under my bonnet and the expansion tank cap was hissing. The main pipe from the radiator to the thermostat housing was hard. Which again is normal? Only noticed this since its got warmer. Anyhow I was thinking about getting a new cap for my expansion tank (phase two black one) but there's that many out there with different pressures etc. I've bought one but it's so cheap and nasty and is only rated at lbs .13. Any ideas for a good known suitable for my car? Thank you Danny

the Turbo Diesel 205 rad cap is rated at 1.4 bar, standard gti is 1 bar, that will help as the boiling point raises under pressure, however even without a cap the system should still be capable of cooling the engine when moving along, even at only 30 mph.

I would start with a new thermostat.

also running a good mix of coolant helps.

Hello, thanks for the info. It's just had a new thermostat and coolant about a 3 months ago. 50/50 mix, I may increase it sometime to 60/40. Motorway speeds it's stays under the 4th bar. When I come into slow traffic its seems to creep just over the fourth bar . Anyhow thank you. Any pointers where to get a new cap?

Any motor factors. Normal 205 one is 1.1 bar and a 306 one is 1.3 bar. They are under a fiver. If you order one from Peugeot, they are the modern circular plastic ones, not the metal ones with "ears"
