Tu Lower Rear Engine Mount Bush And The Fork Bush

Recommended Posts

205Rallee

Is it possible to remove and refit the lower engine mount (65mm) without removing the aluminium bracket from the car? I'm guessing the rubber can be hacksawed and the metal outer casing, but can a new bush be fitted by heating up the mounting and pushing it back in whilst the bracket is still attached to the car? Or is it just easier to take it all off and refit the bushes (inc the small fork bush) with it all off the car?

You can get tools to do it on the car, puller type threaded bars, even hydraulic ones. Cheapest way is to just remove the mount.

Removal with it on the car is easy enough, just mangle it then beat it out with a hammer and screwdriver.

The only real way of refitting a new mount with it still on the car, is to get a powerflex bush, as they come in two halves, and can be fitted by hand without a press

Take the mount off. I've seen the result of folk trying to do it in situ and it's not pretty! Hammer rash everywhere! The new mounts take a reasonable amount of pressing in. A large vice will suffice if you don't have a press.

or try the heat and shrink method, bush in the freezer for an hour, then casting in the oven for about 10-15 minutes, push them together by hand, place in cold running water to cool off.

The easy route of leaving it on the car and bashing it out did appeal, but I just knew it wouldn't work, or it would end up butchered. So I went with the "take it all off and do it properly" method and that was definitely a good decision as I can't imagine how hard it would be to get the new bush into the mount whilst it is still on the car.

Used a drill to cut through the rubber in the bushes, hacksawed through the metal outer ring and poked them out with a screwdriver.

Did exactly what Mei said , bushes in the fridge overnight and the mounts - steel fork and alloy mount, both went in the oven with the Sunday roast. Big rubber mallet from Tool Station (£2.50) bashed them in with no damage. Still took me 5 hours, but I didn't damage anything and did a good job.

Used a Febi bilstein 94000 small bush and Vibratechnics 320b solid rubber 65mm big bush.
