Car Won't Start, Help Trouble Shooting

Recommended Posts

My car has always had flawless starts: turn the key and it springs up. Three days ago I parked it in the garage after a regular drive, nothing wrong, no misfires, etc.

Yesterday I went to start the GTI and it wouldn't fire up. Engine turns, but won't start.

These are things I know after trouble shooting:

- battery is good

- coil is good (nice blue spark from HT)

- ignition wires are good

- distributor turns, cap and rotor are good

- ignition amplifier is good (swapped in another unit, no change)

- fuel pump works (pulled fuel line on rail and fuel flows well when pump is on)

- AFM is good (swapped in another unit, no change)

- ECU is good (swapped in another unit, no change)

- air passages are unobstructed

This narrows it down to..?

- coolant temperature sensor: I bought a new one today, will swap later tonight after work (fingers crossed!)

- fuel tachiomeric relay: my fuel pump is always on the minute I turn the key, isn't the relay supposed to tuirn in on only after I switch on the ignition? Perhaps my tach. relay has been bypassed and now has finally died, not telling the ECU to turn on.)

- wiring?

- what else?

The fact that the car went from running perfect to not starting at all seems to me like some sort of electrical fault. It didn't deteriorate over time, it just stopped working. I am hoping dearly that it is the temp sensor as I have a new one available. The relay not so much. Is the tach relay a special kind of relay or is it a generic type that can be replaced with any standard Bosch relay? If not then how much is a new tch relay, or does someone here have a used but good one for sale? I have loads of spare parts for my GTI but no tach relay.

I am hoping to get the car started soon as I was planning to drive to Pennsylvania (5 hr drive) this weekend for the largest import car show in the USA, might be the only 205 GTI there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the GTI will make the journey this weekend.

I am not a mechanic or at all experienced but I had something similar happen to my 205 cti, when I turned the key I could here the fuel pump working but nothing else not even a click. Turned out to be 1 of 2 things. 1 bought a new tachymetric relay, 2 there was a multiplug/connection block located around the engine, One of the terminals had completely corroded away, I bypassed the terminal and since then the car has started first time every time without any issues. I was also having issues with the starter motor up until this point, nearly bought a new one but this too has been fine without issue since as well.

I have no voltage at the injectors, and I have no spark at the plugs.

Swapped my distributor and nothing happened. Still not start.

Could it be the fuel pump relay?
