Water Pump Gasket - Metal Or Paper

Recommended Posts

hoodygoodwood

I am fitting a new QH water pump to my XU9JA engine , I have done a few of these before and have always used the normal paper type gasket but this pump came with a metal type gasket which I have not used before . It is the same shape as the other type but made of thin steel ( I assume )with a raise central V - are these ok ? Is this a better design , thought I would ask before using it then finding out they are pants .

I got one with mine and the bloody thing had been folded in half when i opened the box, straightened it out and used it anyway as the old pump and gasket were history and didnt have any other option of replacing it at the time, its been fine last 2 years.

I've used two of the metal ones, one from Gates and one from pug, both torqued up correctly. The pug one is currently leaking to the tune of a litre per hour.

Engines coming out soon anyway, but if it wasnt i'd be fooking angry.

I'll be adding a bead of some sort of gasket paste next time to be sure it doesn't happen again.

I should add, the Gates one worked fine on the Gates water pump, it's the Pug gasket on the Gates pump that i have the leak with.

Fitted the new pump today with the metal gasket and a small amount of Hylomar blue gasket .

Went to my local engineering shop today to get a quote for my crankshaft regrind and polish only to find they have got rid of their grinder because of lack of demand , looking for a new machine shop .
