New Starter Motor Fitted - Starting 70% Better.....

Recommended Posts

davey205

Had a new starter motor fitted today to combat problematic starts especially hot starts which we're slowly getting worse up to 6-7 times before firing up.

Now its 70% better than it was but still get the odd no start and the rev counter ALWAYS spikes now when you turn the key..... maybe bad earth?

Its also not running right which I hope will settle down very jerky , lumpy like a V8 seems very rich. <_<

I'll check the battery wires are on tight and the earth then give the inlet system etc a good clean out & check for air leaks then give it " a bloody good thrashing! " failing that take it back to garage its costing me a fortune recently lol

Sounds like changing the temp sensor would be a good place to start.

No when it doesn't want to start it doesn't even turn over .... never has done I just well barely even a click but a development now is that it no longer seems to be heat related which really makes me wonder if its the old Clifford which even I can tell is a bit of a bodge job.

I meant to say it was running very lean I think not rich it burbles and pops at idle and is very jerky ..... yes I know even jerkier than a normal 205 very challenging to drive smoothly I don't know what they did at the garage but it upset something big time.

I will update if ever I find out what it is....

Sounds like its the starter solenoid wire that is having voltage drop then. Do a search for engine bay multiplug or somehting along the lines of that. You basically will see that the thick blue wire will either have broken internally or at somepoint has a high resistance. You can check this by getting somebody to try switch the car on, if it clicks youll know its the starter wire, you can do a makeshift bodge of using a relay to switch a strong 12v from battery but most people will replace the wire at fault.

Replacing the 2 ignition barrel wiring plugs fixed the problem on mine.

They looked clean, but it was the only thing left I'd not changed from the wires to the starter, that and the switch inside the barrel itself.

Fixed the problem. Try unplugging it and plugging it back in to see if it makes a difference, did the trick for me the odd couple of times before I replaced them.

I know what you mean..... a few weeks ago it stalled and wouldn't start in the middle of a major train station on a slight hill, gf and I had to push it into a parking space and over a big speed bump I opened the bonnet and pretended I knew what I was doing till breakdown arrived.

I used to keep a spare relatively high gauge wire in the glovebox so when the solenoid wire failed (and i was too lazy to fix it) i could jump it directly from the battery, you get some strange looks when you start your car from under the bonnet.....even stranger when you've left it in gear and you near enough run yourself over!

In the end i fitted a starter relay which was activated by the original solenoid wire as many others have and never had any trouble again.

I had a new style (M001T80481) starter which I fitted with the rad off so I could access it. The old one used to suffer from "heat soak", or so I thought as fitting the new one did the same thing. Click...Click....Click with turn of the key.

I replaced the wire to the battery and alternator wire also the short wire to the little black slam panel fuse box (this feed power to the ignition barrel). But still would click...click....click.

Connecting a wire direct from the solenoid to the battery would start it, even when the battery was half flat, so it's definitely a wiring issue. Most probably a connector somewhere.

I thought about fitting a relay and was about to, but I could see it end up going rusty if I mounted it in the engine bay and if I'm feeding wire through the bulk head, I may as well follow the originals and use them as they looked in good nick.

I Hacked off the only plugs I could find (Ignition barrel ones) and fitted 2 replacement cheap multi plugs for about £4 each from a local auto factors. It did the trick. So I'm confident that's the problem even though the old connectors looked clean.

hmm its back to doing it badly big time the only difference is not heat related getting very bad now 6 or 7 tries every time and just barely fires up almost like the battery is nearly flat.

I'll take it back and suggest these things not even gonna try myself especially as the work they did was supposed to cure it

You tried the ignition barrel connectors?

Nope, I mean I shall mention that though, not gonna try and do it myself.

Try unplugging them and plugging them back in again.

If you can remove the lower panel they are usually clipped to the side plastic.

It's usually obvious which plugs are for the ignition, follow the wires to the barrel,

Any chance your Ignition barrel is worn?

I had similar problems, if I jiggled the key I could get the dash lights to come on and off, which manifested in failing to start. Changed the barrel and problem went away.

I'll have a jiggle of the barrel then see if i can find the correct wires then try cleaning them and plugging them back in hopefully it is obvious as you say.

I took it back my mechanic had a look and it played up on cue which was nice..... so he could see how bad the starting has got, he said he reckons he got sent a bad starter as when it did start it didn't sound like it wanted to so he is going to order a new 1 and fit it next week..... I trust him so we'll see what happens.

The only other development is that Iv'e noticed a few times the fuel pump occasionally stays on even with everything off and the key out!

& completely off topic but I'm taking bets as to how long my ever worsening speedo wobble will be before cable snaps completely !

Tell him to fit the M001T80481 starter. Its more a modern reliable starter and is a direct swap. Also try and go for the mitsubishi one rather than the Valeo,

Faulty tach relay causes the pump to stay on. It's near the ECU, take a look to see if its scorched by unplugging it.

Speedo wobble on these are common, I call it a Peugeot feature rather than a fault.

Wobbling speedo- definitely a feature, I can say with confidence that I'm doing 30 (ish) mph...
