Very Clean Topaz Blue 1.6 Gti 38K... Leave Std Or Mod...?

Recommended Posts

I purchased a MINT low milage 1.6 gti Topaz Blue 205 off my dad (he was the first owner from new) many moons ago 2001 ish, i was only 17, so it had a good year of use, lol, and then upgraded to a 1.9 gti in my second year of driving. I sold the Topaz Blue 205 to a strange guy, and never though i would see it again.

Anyway, came to light today, that my dads dads best mate purchased it and kept it in his car collection storage building for the last 13 years... and it was kept from me untill now, 13 years on, of its existance.

I was going to do a 306 GTi6 conversion with 309 bits, to another 205, but it dosnt seem right to give another car love, and really want to get the Topaz out of storage, and get it up together (shouldnt be too much work from memory)

Is it wrong to do a 306 GTi6 conversion to the Topaz? Or is it the right thing to do?

Whats a MINT 205 1 previous owner with 38k worth?

There are loads of other 205's out there that will convert into a GTI6. Seems a shame to do it to a low mileage original car.

Personally if it was my car, I would keep it standard, make sure it is indeed MINT so an engine refresh if needed etc and then sell on for silly money. But do whatever you like, if you want to keep it and use it then do what you will enjoy most, if you are keeping it as an investment then keep it standard, likewise if you want to sell on straight away.

No, my dad was first owner, im the second owner, sold it to the guy and he never sent the log book off, and the car is exactly how it was 13/14 years ago, still has the tic tacs in the door pocket! From the sounds of it, my Grandad gave him the money for it, for him to keep untill i was of a sensible age... MY grandad passed away years ago, and no one knew! Untill i got a call this afternoon to go up to the yard...

I recently got a graphite grey 1.6 with only 60,000 miles on it that had been off the road since 2002. I was also not sure if to keep it standard or put my mi16 into it, decided to mod it as I loved the mi16 engine and since im not selling any time soon I didn't really care if it hurt the resale price.

I would do whatever you going to enjoy the most

If it was me, I would restore to original and sell on, or store for some more years, the price of original clean 205s is getting silly and is only going one way, as Tom says there's plenty other 205s to stick a gti6 engine in.

Personally i'd leave it as is; there arent many P1's left in original condition, let alone low mileage Topaz examples so its only going to rarer as time goes on...

I've recently re-trimmed my track car back up into a road car in a bid to make it look more standard, and i daresay over the next few years i'll be taking the GTI6 out and putting it back to an 8v :)

Its right what people are saying, value wise they're going up, but that's not really all these cars are about is it... It's about having something that's going up in value and is more fun to use than having a bank account doing the same thing.

Compared to most modern cars, even a stock 1600 GTI will be a welcome change to the daily drive so i say get it back up to scratch and enjoy it the way peugeot intended, if you desperately want a '6 engined car then find a cheap and cheerful project to convert :)

Wow!.. Nice surprise that, you lucky b?£t$rd! ;)

Sounds like a keeper to me and would not be changing a thing about it. As said above, there's plenty of other one's to modify.

Get some pics up of the Topaz!

I personally would leave as is for now, drive it about and having had it a year or two then decide what it is you want to do with it. If you enjoy it and it puts a smile on your face keep it as it is, if you enjoy it but want more from it then mod it but don't cut corners and get everything done properly. If you don't like it and its not really for you then either sell it now or put back in storage and sell it for silly money in another 10 years time.

You could always keep all the original parts if you do mod it (engine) and give it to any future buyer so they can easily return to original condition.
