Pinking Under Light Throttle 2800- 3500

Recommended Posts

gtiburge

hi i have had this problem for quite some time it seems to only occur when engine is cold and on light throttle cant hear it when it is warm, it dose pink briefly when warm when you open it right up from any revs but then stops! engine is healthy it shows 185/190 psi across all cylinders i have replaced many items just to get it running sweet

atp recon afm

h&h recon dizzy new coil

plugs

known good ignition amp

car is a standard 1988 1.9gti bar k&n induction kit

doesn't appear to be any air leaks and dizzy is set in the standard position and i run tesco 99 my only thought is fueling as it all so doesn't seem to pull from 4500 to redline as fast as i can remember my other gti's doing i was going to get some cleaned injectors to give that a try as the car was sat for 9 year prior to me having it but have done near 10000 miles since then and i would have thought that would be good enough for a blow out !

i was going to have it on a rolling road just to see what it is doing fueling wise but before i wast £70 on rr would be nice if there was any suggestions

any help much appreciated as rather frustrated :(

Have you tried retarding the distributor a bit to see if that cures it?

The standard advance figures are for four star so haven't been relevant for years.

Is it definatly pinking? A cracked exhaust manifold can sound similar so may be worth a look.

It should stop pinking before it loses power so there is something else wrong. Getting the injectors cleaned/tested isn't a bad idea, also when did you last change the fuel filter?

yh i thought as much but i would much rather buy some injectors out right as i use the car daily and cant have it off the road the fuel filter is probable'y only 5000 miles old

Unplug the vacuum advance and see if the issue disappears.

Certainly sounds like it's over-advancing under vacuum if it pinks on light load and not under heavy load.

Yep it's the original from that engine but had it refurbished to standard spec by H&H

Should be a Bosch dizzy with a part number ending 066 if it's for a non-CAT 1.9 GTi. Worth double checking as I've seen all sorts of incorrect dizzy fitted that appear to work but aren't right and you'll never get the engine running optimally with.

With a standard engine and the correct dizzy refurbished to standard spec, clearly it shouldn't be doing this - might be worth speaking to H&H to get their thoughts on the matter.

Well they certainly look like marks from factory(not just a scribe or ruff tap with chisel) the marks line up nearly bang on in the middle

Did you fix this issue?

I had a similar problem - it turned out the Dizzy was in need of a refurbishment- the springs inside had pretty much turned to iron filings - have you tried another dizzy?
