Bits In Oii

Recommended Posts

FarmerPug

i changed the oil in my 305 yesterday (1580cc XU engine) and there were bits in the old oil that came out, some quite noticeable, and when i opened up the oil filter although nothing in there was particularly big i did see very small brass coloured specs throughout the oil.

The car passed its mot yesterday the emissions were ok, it doesnt use any engine oil, the automatic transmission oil leaks but its a slow leak and easy to keep on top of, if there are bits present in the oil i assume a rebuild would be necessary, generally what goes on these XU engines and what parts can still be bought?

My big end shells were worn through the white metal and down to the copper backing , this could be the cause of the particles in your oil . Does sound like engine rebuild time .

Brass coloured particles found in the oil pan/filter , and sometimes even all the oil content coloured/saturated with brass kinda shiny specks - it's main/big end shell 'babbitt' material ! meaning they're shot .

As said time to pop the sump off and have a look , if you get lucky you might caught them on time before they score crank journals ... so , i'd do the inspection asap .

when i did my engine rebuild i replaced the big ends and mains as a matter of course, they were ok, but in your case as said above, more than likely to be the shells

drop the sump and have a peek
