Gti6 Trouble Shooting Required

Recommended Posts

jamie_1992

ok so i took the 205 out for a spin this evening and the engine struggles to rev past 4000 rpm. if you just plant your foot it will sit at 4000 and wont go past but you can get it through the whole range if you slowly push the throttle in.

first thing i checked was the plugs, all looked fine gave them a quick clean with a wire brush and put back but no luck.

where should i turn my attention to now im thinking something to do with the throttle body?

Is the tb opening fully?

Is it struggling and missing?

Does it have fuel?

Were the plugs fouled? What plugs are ypu using?

right well i have put some new plugs in along with a new inlet gasket as old was broken and thought it could be that. it ran ok and reved as it should so i thought i had fixed it but then took it for a drive and same thing happened wont rev past 4000 if you boot it but can ease it up past with light throttle, it seems to be over fuelling as it not cough and splutters has also coked the plugs up black

so need some help on what controls the fuelling

How old is your lambda? They can cause big issues. Try unplugging it and driving without abd see if that helps. Could also be cts.

lambda is fairly new but makes no difference if its unplugged. i tested the tps and seemed to be ok although it only went up to 4.5v rather than 5v, i couldn't get much of a reading from the map sensor but think thats down to my lack of multimeter knowledge. going to get some sensors anyway but cant get them till tueday now

if its not them im out of ideas

Has your car had the diagnostic socket fitted? If not it may be worth fitting one as you can waste a lot of money just throwing parts at it, even if there isn't a fault logged the live data is a massive help on its own to work out what's going on.

I'd try testing the green coolant sensor first.

do you think the coolant sensor could really stop it reving it makes no difference if i disconnect it other than the idle increases

Not getting on very well, so far iv replaced the coolant temp sensor, map sensor throttle bode with all sensors, cam sensor and fuel pump I'm still getting the same problems. It won't rev, coughs and splutters if I plant my foot but if I lightly push it it will rev all the way to the red

Im running out of ideas now, thinking I'm going to need to send it to someone

Any help

Also worth checking Dizzy cap and coil tower for cracks.

I have already said this but the money your wasting throwing bits at this fault, if you've got a diagnostic socket then get it plugged in, if you haven't then fit one, it will Save time and money for any future faults aswell.

I started writing that, then i had to take an impatient child to the toilet, so ignore that whole post lol

I agree with pugdamo, I had a similar issue with my gti6, it wouldn't rev past 5000 and I wasted a lot of money changing parts. Eventually got a diag port fitted and used pp2000. It turned out to be an alternator issue, although it doesn't sound quite like your problem as mine would not rev above 5000 no matter what I did.

Incidentally, a local garage fitted a diagnostic port to the loom for £15. I found that a generic fault reader that the garage had wasn't sufficient to diagnose it only pp2000 gave enough info

Well iv ordered a pp2000 and going to finally fit the obd socket. Luckily most of the bits iv tried have been spares iv collected so not cost mush only a cts at £20

well an update on this, its now running spot on and turns out its the so called hi flow fuel filter i got from torques, once removed it works just like it used to

I also had issue with that filter when getting a car mapped on the rolling road. Sufficient for about 150bhp and no more!

that will do, though tbh you might as well go with the totally standard filter for significantly less and still use the same fittings.

After just discovering the same issue with my filter.. What is the reasoning behind it not being sufficient for 150bhp+ is it to fine a filter etc? Reason I ask is it I've mounted everything neatly so can I change the gauze to a less restrictive one? But then guessing that could be problematic with smaller particles?

I'm on an6 fittings but if it's a bigger filter etc I'll probably have to get new hose and reroute so want to buy the best solution if i can't run with anything that's already fitted
