Converting From Webers Back To Standard Injection

Recommended Posts

Hi

I've done a search and most topics seem to suggest keeping the webers!! I plan to use the car for "targa rallying" and twin choke carbs are prohibited so....

What's involved in switching back to the standard setup? The car came with the carb conversion but I have a spare engine with all the ancillaries. Must the "hardware" match the ecu and electronics in the car. I believe there were two different types of injection, do I need a particular type. As far as I can tell the wiring harness for the injection is still in situ. The carbs are running with a distributer and original pump in tank.

In short, can I just bolt everything from my spare engine onto the carbed engine, wire it up and expect it to run?

What year is the car, engine code etc? And what's the engine code on the donor engine?

I can't believe almost a year has passed since my original post.

Anyway my plan is still to remove the webers and refit an injection system. I have an array of parts gathered up and hopefully with the help of some forum advice, I can cobble something together.

So, this is what I have to start with, 1.9 d6b engine on webers. Just completed a track day, engines running well. Im currently in the process of removing the carbs - hence fuel line and vacuum disconnected.

And this is the inlet system I have to work with.

The car itself is a 1989 model, be1 style gearbox.

The engine in the car is not the original. I bought it of the forum with the carbs attached, but used my existing wiring loom, just disconnected whatever I didn't need, so its all still there.

So I suppose the big question, is it possible to get all to work?

No reason why not, only caveat is, is the engine fitted with a high performance cam, this will upset the airflow meter and it will run badly. If it's a standard cam then no issues really other than the standard 8v Jetrobic foibles.

Why would a non-standard cam upset the afm? It just measures air and then the ecu determines how long to open the injectors to match the volume of air with the volume of fuel needed. Cam doesn't even register.

the much larger pulses from a longer duration camshaft can make the flap bounce.

Selling the carbs and intake?

Made some progress with this. Standard manifold replaced and fuel lines plumbed.

The two ports( v shape) on the underside of the throttle body are for water, one to the expansion bottle, the other to the thermostat. Does the orientation matter?

I've read that I can run without the sad. Do I just block of the ports on the inlet manifold and the air intake duct?

The crank position sensor was tied up out of the way on the original engine. Can I run without it too?

Why would you want to run without the SAD?

My 1.9 8V was running on the MP3.1 Motronic system, and did not have the SAD fitted when I bought it.

Getting it started was an utter pig. I plumbed in a SAD, and after that it fired up straight away with a nice idle.

I would recommend using the SAD.

I'm fairly sure the CPS is essential when using the standard system.

not with Jetronic with a dizzy, engine speed signal comes from dizzy to ecu ignition amp and ecu

It's not going to be a daily driver, mainly used for Targa and nav rallies so a lumpy cold idle isn't really a concern.

Really? Mine has the same MP3.1 on but I've removed the SAD and it all fires up with a steady idle fine, even in the middle of winter.

I wouldn't run a Jetronic car without one though, whatever it's being used for.

Like Mei says, the jetronic system doesn't need / use the CPS, it's there purely for the old peugeot diagnostics system & probably dead by now anyway.
