Speedo Bulb Changed But Was There An Easier Way ?!

Recommended Posts

davey205

Had 1 blown bulb behind speedo and 2 flaky one's that came on when they felt like it.

Got the visor off relatively easily and changed blown bulb turned the intermittant one's to a more solid contact position ( less wobbly ), also sprayed oil down the speedo cable and no wobble ( for a few weeks )?!?

Then came putting the visor back i couldn't see how to do it without removing the lower part of the dash below the steering wheel, was there an easier way out of interest?

No need to remove the lower part of the dash to remove and refit the instrument cowling.

The lower steering wheel cowl has two recessed screws which attach the two plastic pegs (for use of a better word) to the underside of the dash cowling. If you undo those from below, you can remove the dash cowling without having to remove anything related to the lower dash or steering wheel cowling.

All you should need to remove is the heater control dials and trim, the coin tray and the small triangular piece as the various instrument cowling screws are underneath.

Hmm, well thanks still a bit confused but hey ho.... my visor with the pegs I couldn't align with the trim above the steering wheel with 2 big holes because of the angle of steering wheel and instrument cluster.

For the speedo cable would copper grease have been better to use? I just sprayed WD40 and now virtually no wobble the cable was very dry and rusty.

Those pegs have screws on the underside, which you can unscrew by going in through underneath the steering cowling. The steering cowling will then come out without those two plastic pegs attached, making it easy.

Copper grease is an anti-seize compound and not a lubricant as such - you should never use copper grease to lubricate moving parts IMO.

Well thanks for explaining, still a bit fuzzy but hopefully brain will work better for next time what would be a good high melting point lubricant to use if well...... when the speedo starts wobbling again? as from searching it seems that it running close to the exhaust will burn that grease off in no time at all.......

It often makes it easier to drop the steering column a bit I find. Underside of the column there's two 11mm nuts...undo those to drop it.
