Tachometer Not Working - Ideas To Fix, Plse!

Recommended Posts

The tacho shows no sign of life, unfortunately - all I've thought to do (so far) is check fuses, which seem ok.

Can anyone suggest things to check, please?

(instrument panel is out of car at present, btw)

Check the wiring on the coil is all OK.

I think they have a crank sensor to drive the tacho but I don't know any more than that.

yep, check the wiring to the sensor then adjust the sensor, IIRC should be a 1mm air gap from the flywheel.

I'm not sure that a TD pickup will drive a petrol tacho will it, which that one pictured clearly is?

Certainly tacho's that are driven by the coil will have filtering circuits on them to deal with the spikes and I would imagine at a minimum that filtering circuit would need to be removed/bypassed/reduced in the same way you need to in order to get them to work on a ECU driven tacho output as used by most modern ECU's.

Whoa - you reckon the instruments are from a PETROL model?

Surely not - there is a (working) glow plug warning light in the set, so that rather says thet these are the original set for the TD model??

The rev limiter is 6K so i;d imagine they were from a petrol . All models have the glow plug light, even gtis.

See here for diesel gauge wiring help; http://205d.free.fr/compteur.htm

The TD rev counter only reads to 6k rpm and even the petrol clocks have a glowplug warning light present (but no bulb fitted)

Oh, that is most interesting - maybe a previous owner stuck a (petrol) replacement instrument set in, for whatever reason - from earlier comments by Anthony, it would seem that tacho in diesel has different attributes, so perhaps this petrol tacho could never work in this TD car !?!

Ha - I've now compared the instrument set with my sons STDT set and - spot on chaps - my set is clearly not the same, with 6K redline vs. 5K on the STDT !

How did I never notice? - doh!!

Now I need a set of instruments for a TD - anyone got a spare set??
