Any Real Benefits To A Gti Start Up?

Recommended Posts

Richie-Van-GTi

After many years of no pugs (shame on me) and being in a very long term relationship (20 yr) I am now back to being a bachelor and wanting........well needing a new toy. I aim to start up with building another fast trackday car with possibly racing it eventually. So my choice of weapon is a 205 obviously ????.

Since it will be a shell upwards build, other than arches is there any point in a gti shell? Just based on prices at the moment and how much I would be changing..basically everyhting bar the front subframe if it was XU tben iy doesnt seem to make financial sense. Would anyone disagree? Plan is probably to go 2.1 build with xsara vts box and 309 running gear with wilwood brakes.

There seems to be plenty of track prepared 205s for sale already. Perhaps pick up one of these and re-build?

If I am doing it I would prefer to start from fresh. My last one turned out to have a major B post problem and ultimatley became scrap.

If I were to start fresh I'd definitely do one with a Honda or 1.8T VAG engine. So much cheaper and more reliable to get good power out of.

In that case you are probably best off sourcing whatever you can find which is reasonably solid, whether it's a base model or GTi.
