Is This Sitting Too Low At The Back

Recommended Posts

dobboy

I've had a spirit level on the sill when i've had it on level ground and it's completely level, but i've been thinking it's just a touch too low at the back.

(looks wise i'd actually prefer it sat the way it does just after i drop it off all fours, which is higher all round, but i don't want to be buying new springs)

My beam was refurb'd last year so i'm hoping if the consensus is that it's too low it could easily be lifted.

what do you think? is it a notch/spline too low?

I'd raise it 7-8mm on the shock length. You need approx. 20mm rake. ie rear higher than front.

Thanks PT, off forum someone else said to try get 5deg+ back to front.

It handles well but i'm sure i've hit the bump stops on rare occasions.

I'll add it to the to do list.

Looks good but definitely too low for a road car, ride height should be level when balanced under power i.e. under throttle, as said above, rear should be a little higher than the front when static. Try running the car like this with a rear seat passenger and the tires will be rubbing against the body from experience.

Dobboy although raising the rear will deal with bumpstop bashing your rear suspension really did look too soft from my (and Malcs) perspective, it was squatting a lot under WOT and during upshifts. Like many suggest on this forum it's worth considering switching out the 18.9 TB's for thicker bars (and ARB), especially since you've installed stiffer dampers and front springs anyway. It'll certainly make the car more composed and improve its manner all round, just a thought for the future.

I had the same problem on the first tb suspend I lowered on my 1st car a megane coupe I lowered it to match the front drop and when it was on the deck it looked lower on the rear so I drew a conclusion that the rear should always sit about 10mm higher

Purely talking aesthetics here but on most cars you'll find that the apex of the front arch almost always sits higher than the rear arch. Mid-engined cars are the exception as are some exotic FR cars. But its why many vehicles if set at an absolutley level ride height end up with a saggy looking rear.

I don't think it has anything to do with aesthetics, but trying to restore the original roll centres and make the car handle, as it was intended.

Note that the number of splines on each end of the bar differ, so you can have a finer adjustment if you pull out the bar completely and rotate it.

It's possible to adapt on less than 1cm height if you do that, compared to 3-4cm per spline if you pull it far enough to adjust one side of the bar only.

I think mine is 2cm higher at the rear. Front looks similar:

I don't know the shock lengths, it wasn't done like that, and was done before i joined here or seen how others had set theres.

The bars were fitted loose and adjusted to the height i wanted and height measured to make both sides the same.

It's a bit lower than what the guy who rebuilt it had it at initially. (He cautiously said it would be ok)

I think it handles well cornering (for my uses) and it's comfy to drive so i'll not be upgrading any bars, but i'm gonna lift it up a smidgen.

Only thing i don't like is the visual height and also when going fast and there's dips on the road i'm taking the foot off the gas for fear of hitting a bumpstop.

Nice looking car wicked.

Of course, I'm merely pointing out how zero rake also impacts the car aesthetically by visually making the rear end look as if its sagging, an additional issue that both Aldsworth and Dobboy have reported.
