Xs Steering Rack,

Recommended Posts

claypole1360

Hi,

at my last 89 xs MOT, the advisories were all based around the steering rack, I want to replace it with a new or reconditioned unit but I don't know where to get one from or whether I have a square or round rack, any ideas please?

Is any one selling new or reconditioned racks?

Many thanks in advance for your assistance,

Calvin

It should be round/spline drive in a 1989.

Do you still have the sheet with the advisories? It's possible you just need new track rods and/or track rod ends.

I will have a reconditioned 88, non PAS, round / splined rack coming up for sale soon. I bought it from a local motor factor but have decided to upgrade to a VTS rack instead.

If you do need it, let me know.

My '92 rallye had a square drive and not a round one, you need to check this before replacing the rack! Its a very easy swap to a new one, don't do what I've done in the past though and swap one over for another with just as much play! Converted to VTS PAS as a result.

afaik 89-90 was roughly when the round splined was changed to Square on the manual 205 racks, the PAS racks were all still splined till end of production which ties in with the ZX having a splined PAS rack.

Thanks guys, I need to look at my rack tomorrow to see what it is before I take the plunge, I know that the best element of an XS should be its steering, I don't want to faff around changing the ends, rather replace the whole thing and not have to worry too much in the future,

I will be in touch about the offers soon.
