High Beam Problems Still!

Recommended Posts

matty205xs

Hi all, I've recently been having troubles with my high beam as stated in one of my old posts, my brother lent me his light stalk from his 205 to see if it was my stalk which was dodgy his one seemed to work although I don't try it out for any long periods of time, but it made my dash board lights flicker so I bought another one from ebay and fitted that one, it worked first of all but after a couple of times of turning it on and off it started to play up too, each time the high beam did turn on there was a clicking sound coming from the fuse box in the glove box, this also has a couple of relays in it too and it sounded like one of the relays clicking? I've been told by many people that the light stalk on a 205 doesn't have a relay. What on earth is going on with my car as I'm supposed to be getting it motd soon.

Thanks Matt.

Probably the driving light relay you can hear - from memory it's the one on the far left IIRC.

The headlights themselves are not relayed.

Right ok, so why does it seem to only make the clicking noise when the high beam turns on or off and not when I turn the driving lights on or off?

Ill also try and get get hold of malc.

Right I get ya now, so if it has no relay then what could it possibly be because I've been through 3 different light stalks already.

Well it's safe to say it isn't the stalk!

I'd check the earth for the circuit.

It's really not very helpful starting new topics for an existing problem and expecting people to be able to follow.

Original thread here

The high beam circuit is very simple so there's really not much that it can be.

If a new stalk works for a while and then dies, and that's happened on multiple stalks, my best guess would be that something else is causing the stalks to fail - the obvious one is a short somewhere or high-wattage bulbs pulling too much current.

I've just had a look at the wiring diagram and it confirms that the high beam wiring is neither fused or relayed. It goes from the stalk to the fusebox (wire J), splitting at the fusebox into two feeds, one for each light (wires JA and JB). In addition to this, the high beam feed goes to the driving light relay (wire 68) and to the dim-dip relay (wire J1) where, I think, it acts as the earth return path for the low current side. There's also the wire to the instrument cluster for the high-beam warning light (wire J1 again)

Unplug both of those relays and see if the fault remains, and double check that you're running standard H4 headlight bulbs - indeed, I'd be tempted to replace them as a matter of course as something odd is going on.

Logically, it can't be the earth if the dipped beam lights work, as the earth is common for that and the high-beams.

The driving lights wiring seems to cause some odd problems, I had a problem once when high beam was turned on a driving light bulb wasnt working but because of this the high beam stayed on even after turning lights off, try disconnecting the driving light looms to see if theres any change, yellow connector behind each headlight, dont get mixed up with the indicator as its the same kind of plug.

Sure it wasn't the other way around Andy? The driving lights can stay on with the high beam bulbs faulty/missing, but I've not heard it happening the other way around.

Indeed, looking at the wiring diagram, in theory it shouldn't be possible - although the diagram is clearly wrong for what feeds the driving light relay as it's shown coming off the alternator so I'm keeping a slightly open mind about it!

Thanks for all of your suggestions, but I have a feeling the stalk that iv just bought is also faulty as I've managed to get the high beam working but you kind of have to slam it into high beam for it to work also it won't let me flash my high beam lights when all other lights are off, so I might got down the route of buying a brand new one.

Thanks Matt.
