Wet Tyre Recommendations - Circuit Racing

Recommended Posts

SweetBadger

Hi, I'm entering my first race in 3 wks time (hopefully!) at Cadwell Park in the Trackday Trophy series. Exciting Times! :D

I've already decided to go with Yoko A048s for dry-damp conditions in the medium compound as I've found them nice and grippy on trackdays I've used them on, and they seem to last well.

The car is still driven on the road occasionally, so my plan is to run a set of decent wet road tyres on the car for any road journeys, and then if the heavens open I can use them as wet tyres on circuit too.

I was always very impressed with the Goodyear Eagle F1 tyres in the wet (although not so good on a dry track - we destroyed a nearly new set in the dry through overheating at Bedford Autodrome!), so my starter for 10 is the new Eagle F1 GSD3.

Any other recommendations? Must be in the MSA 1a, 1b tyre list.

Cheers.

Is the AD08R on the list?

If not, Michelin Pilot Sport 3.

Main thing you'll find is that they need different camber settings to the AO48, so it would be worth checking and marking your top mounts and figuring how many turns on the track rods will get you between the two figures required.

The old saxo I used service for had two lines on the top mounts and 1.5 turns out marked on the steering arms :)

Advan ADO 8–R is on the list, and looks like you can pick them up for about £75 a corner.

Also had Michelin PE2s on it for a while and they were great, so if the Pilot Sport 3s come close then for under £50 a corner we may have a winner.

Hadn't thought about changing camber settings - I'm assuming the wet tyre will prefer with less negative camber, and a bit more compliance in the suspension so softer settings on the dampers? Have eccentric top mounts so I can adjust the camber easily enough, but will have to figure out a way of adjusting the tracking to compensate without taking it for a £30 wheel alignment!

Not that I have used them but the Toyo R1R's as a half way house, mind the 48R's etc are fine as long as there's no major standing water,

Tracking get some old Dunlop gauges,

R1Rs are what I use on a wet track day, seem to be okay.

My two cents:

There's a difference in wet track and racing while raining. You could stick with the Yokos if it's not very wet, it's a great tyre when it heats up (much better than R888). In my experience, the R1R is good on wet track only when new. Just bought a new set of PS3 for my daily (306), and they are outstanding in the wet.

If you want fast lap times on wet, you'll need some decent wet racing tyres - silverstone or michelin.
