Exhaust Manifold

Recommended Posts

Phil205

Hi,

My exhaust manifold has a hairline crack and is making noise.

Does anyone know where I can source a replacement ?

8v I'm assuming by your signature? Fairly common issue if so, but there's still plenty of good used items out there.

Best bet is probably to start a topic in the "Wanted" forum as someone on here is bound to have an uncracked one surplus.

Are the nuts normally hard to get off ?

I have been quoted 80 GBP for labour to fit a replacement if all goes well, but 400 GBP if they have problems getting it off.

Is it possible :-

i) to buy a new replacement ?

ii) to weld the current one ?

If you still have the original steel nuts that take a 10mm socket they can round off very easily , the moment it starts to round , stop and hammer on a smaller imperial socket which should allow you to remove the nut .The worse case scenario is that the stud breaks , I have only had this once and it was a nightmare to drill out with a right angle drill . When done replace all studs and nuts with the newer 13mm nuts that are copper coloured .

The original gaskets can rust away and the manifold can corrode away around the port which could be causing your blowing .

As these become rare welding might become a necessity but most cast iron manifolds are warped as well so might need more work .

You can use 306 manifolds etc to name a few as they all used the 8v XU head, Yes the 2 nuts that can give issues are the 2 which you cannot get a socket on, 2 middle lower ones which if in the car can be a right pain in the ****

I suspect a new manifold will be extremely expensive new from Peugeot .Around £20 to £50 on Ebay .

The gaskets are 4 separate individual items , they are not symmetrical so take care when fitting as its easy to get them 180 degrees out and partially block the gas flow . The diameter of the central hole varies a lot between OE and pattern parts , Peugeot gaskets 0349.70 are excellent quality and have the largest hole of the 4 different gaskets I measured .

031494 Exhaust Manifold is £237.91

034790 Exhaust Manifold Gasket is £3.37 each (need 4)

While you're at it, get a new Peugeot exhaust fixing kit to connect manifold to downpipe. P/N 179845, £22.84.

The price of a manifold hasn't moved much (yet) since I bought a new one from Pug, maybe ten years ago.

Sounds like the best route might be new gaskets and try a second hand manifold in the first instance.
