Air / Fuel Mixture

Recommended Posts

Afternoon All,

I have been setting my mixture this afternoon and it is running at about 0.2%. Standard 1.9 Gti with a K&N induction kit.

I know that this is a healthy figure for a modern CAT equipped car but how healthy is it for these, seems a bit lean to me? Is there anything that I can do to optimise the mixture if this is too lean aside from the obvious?

Thanks,

Ashley

This is a non-CAT model you've got from memory isn't it?

If so, it's a on the lean side but if it starts and idles OK and doesn't have a high HC figure then I wouldn't worry too much.

There's a recessed allen head bolt (5mm IIRC) on the AFM for adjusting the idle mixture - clockwise to enrichen, anti-clockwise to lean it off.

Normally I aim for somewhere around 0.5-1.5% CO when setting them up, tweaking it to wherever it seems happiest.

Yes it's a non-CAT model. It seemed way too lean to me and I was worried but it does run and idle fine now.

HC figure isn't anything to worry about, very healthy actually.

I think the issue may be the fact that I have bought a second hand AFM and suspect that it has been messed with to get the car it was originally on through an MOT. Just an inkling that I have.

What would be a healthy HC reading? If I crank the fuel up any more on the AFM the HC reading goes pretty high (or what I think is high). Could the injectors be the issue? Or the ECU?

Any other suggestions?

So I am running the wrong injectors and ECU (both 1.6 items), no wonder she's running lean.

I can't believe I was stupid enough to overlook something so simple, although at least everything is being renewed / replaced slowly.

I will swap these parts and update.

Does Mad Proffessor still offer injector cleaning? Has anyone used him recently (most recent thread I could find him mentioned on was 2013).

Thanks

He's not offering the service currently due to personal issues AFAIK but is/was hoping to be able to offer it again later this year I believe

Thanks for the reply. I have emailed a couple of people to get some prices, £12.50 per injector is pretty good in my book!

I used Injectortune recently who appear to have done a good job and came in at £57 including return postage. May be worth a look if you haven't already.

Just confirmed my order with them, glad to hear they were good for you.
