How Soon Can You Apply For Tax After Sorn?

Recommended Posts

Stu

Hi all,

205 is in for MOT tomorrow, so i was wondering if i apply to tax it (hoping it passes :P) whats the earliest i can apply for the tax and have it start from the 1st April? Could i do it friday?

Another silly question.. IF i can tax it, can i drive it before the 1st April or am i leaving myself open to a jobsworth copper impounding it?

Agreed, but can i tax it on friday (27th) to start april the first? I know when the car is already taxed you can apply two weeks or so before the end of the month but dont know if its different coming off a sorn.

Suppose technically in this instance the tax wont start till the 1st and so it would still be on the sorn till then?

If it's on SORN now I'm pretty sure you won't be able to tax it for April until 1st April (you certainly never used to be able to post date tax).

Apparently....

If your vehicle is not taxed or has a SORN:

If you apply in the last two working days of a month, the tax disc can start
on the first day of the next month. If you apply before then, your tax disc will
be backdated to the start of the current month. (Saturday is classed as a
working day at Post Office branches.)"

So, theoretically, as its the first on Wednesday i could apply for the tax on Monday to start 1st.

All irrelevant anyway i suppose as i cant use the damn thing till the 1st anyway! Unless i sacrifice a months tax for a few days... Hmmmm...

It's an age old question we've all had to face at some point I imagine. Divide the cost of your tax by 12 then ask yourself how much fun your car is and if driving it for two days is worth that amount to you
