205 Gti 1.9 Starting Issues

Recommended Posts

James Cornell

I have recently rebuilt my XU 1.9 engine and everything has been cleaned/refurbed/replaced over a 7 month period, I have driven it for just over 700 miles now and I have noticed a very strange issue when starting the car.

Normally when you start the car it will turn over once or twice and then it fires, it will then rev up to around 1500RPM for a second or so and then the revs drop off and it does the usual 205 GTI hunting before warm. What I have noticed now is that sometimes (about 50/50 at the moment) it starts normally and sometimes it will just turn over and over and over until eventually it starts up but with no rev from the engine it just creeps up to an idle.

I am fairly sure that this is not the AFM as I have started the car without the AFM and it will rev up to 1500RPM or so and then promptly cut out, so I have ruled that out. As mentioned above it has had most components changed and this does not seem to be a running issue as once the car has started (even on a faulty start) it will idle beautifully (in 205 GTI terms).

To try and illustrate this I have uploaded two videos to YouTube and you can see the difference, I really want to sort this out as I also put a BRAND NEW Valeo starter on the car when I rebuilt it and I don't want to wear it out in 12 months...

I am fairly sure that this will be some sort of issue with one of the electrical components wearing out or not getting a good signal/bad earth ETC but I wanted to run it past you good people as I am sure someone out there has had a similar issue and may be able to shed some light on this…

It looks like it's taking a while for fuel pressure to build up, there is a non return valve of some sort in the fuel pump assembly that should hold pressure while the engine is off that has most likely failed but I forget the specifics.

Is that within the fuel pump assembly in the fuel tank or the FPR on the fuel rail?

It's in the fuel pump assembly in the tank, accessed under the rear seats.

Ok I will see what my options are, if I'm replacing the pump it may be worth changing the lines too...

Is the non return valve serviceable or will i need a new fuel pump?
