Top Gear With No Clarkson. What Next Assumptions?

I blame production for a lot of the supposed failings recently on TG. My Mrs pointed out that the "slope" comment should have been caught in the editing room and never aired. Doesn't make it right for a second if it was used in a deliberately racist manner but she has a very valid point.

Someone was at least complicit with that being aired...or it was done deliberately like the "eeney meany..." 'leak'.

Possibly - no idea.

Keep hearing Guy Martin's name and I don't know enough about him beyond the odd thing he's presented. Irritated the hell out of me.

I do know that TG as a car enthusiast show would put me back to watching it on my own when the wife's gone to bed lol.

I like Top Gear and enjoy watching it but it's become very staged recently and while it has its moments they aren't as funny as they think they are.

I think producers should carry a lot of the can (and Clarkson too if he has as much influence as is suggested) they are meant to be the quality control that stop certain stuff that might be OK for off-screen banter when people get carried away but should never get on air.

I get the impression it's turned into too much of an old boys club.

I think it needed shaking up a bit and a change of tune - shame that won't include three people who do have pretty good on screen chemistry together and are very talented journalists / presenters.

Can't see how the BBC could keep Clarkson after he punched someone while essentially at work though.

I watched a bit of old new Top Gear on YouTube the other night. Reminded me how good it was.

There was a great £1,500 coupes that aren't Porsche's one (can only find second two parts on YouTube first is on some other video site that should work)

And a good Clarkson takes an Alfa 147 GTA round the track one.

Those are examples of when it was more about the cars it was good. It's become too much about stunts recently.

I think Guy Martin is pretty good on his own. Defo an acquired taste, he'd annoy a lot of viewers. Main problem with Guy is IMO he's not much of a team player and a bit of a loose cannon so I doubt he'd work so well in a trio of presenters and wouldn't tow the BBC line.

My thoughts are that the three of them are equally annoying in their own rights. Three huge egos that have had a free rein for far too long. I'm not a hippy or liberal do gooder but comments about slopes and the Falkland debacle are just ridiculous. More so saying that the number plate was pure coincidence! I watch because at time it is funny and I love cars. I hope they just reinvent it still with a humorous side but without the ridiculous trio of bell ends!

The show didn’t need a “shake up”, its evolved over the period it was aired and would have continue to evolve to stay entertaining.

It doesn’t need a critic to tell producers that, they know when things get boring and repetitive. I imagine the people who make TG are just like everyone here, but it’s always easy to criticise than come up with new ideas of your own and then prove the ideas will work.

Been creative is hard, but been a critic is a doddle. Everyone seems to have an opinion these days and with the aid of social media those opinions are widely expressed.

Personally It gets me down listening to opinions of my work as it seems like everyone looks for the negative. If the show was perfect in every way for every episode I reckon people would still find fault.

TG had is good shows and watchable semi-interesting shows. But I never remember a particularly bad one as I still find myself watching the re-runs on Dave.

Edit

"Guy Martin"

I like the idea, big fan of him myself, though the show would end up been a bike show!

I dont think Guy Martin would be interested. Its not even remotely his sort of format. Remember its an entertainment show

Going by his facebook post I think he's surprised by the nomination. Even getting Chris Harris on or Chris Evans would change the format to a car show again and quite frankly its not as successful in this format..

Who are they?

I think that's Steve Merchant in the middle. And it looks like Ricky Gervais on the end?

Not everyone's opinion but the 3 men above should be all shot!

Top gear will return, as I'm pretty sure the bbc won't want to bin one of their biggest shows just because the presenters have changed. It's happened before and I'm sure will happen again.

Come on, think of the positive.

Chris Evans won't be participating. Isn't that worth celebrating? A guy who thinks so much of himself he mysteriously seems to be able to persuade others to agree and pay him stupid money to be simply the most annoying tw*t conceivable.

How about the Mighty Car Mods crew for new Top gear?

Marty and Moog?

I find them likeable, and I'd be interested to see what they'd do with a budget.

There's not a bad pool of rival motoring show presenters at the moment. I reckon Fuzz Townshend, Tim Shaw, Ant Anstead, Philip Glenister and Jodie Kidd all do a good job in their own way on their respective shows.

You'd need to rethink Top Gear to get any of them or a combination to slot in there, but then if the Clarkson, Hammond, May trio are off, maybe that's not a bad thing.

Technically as none of the presenters have been sacked you could see all three return.

As Andy Wilman has just quit expect the format to evolve on another channel soon...

Completely agree with this. The BBC director with the task of replacing Jeremy has stated that he is in no way banned from the BBC and he will return after a break to do something. Nothing has been said but I can see, after a break of around a year or so, Jeremy will be offered a new contract which will likely draw the others back in.

I wonder if they will go independent again then they can create a show how they want and sell it to any network.
