Wipers Won't Park At Bottom Of Windscreen

Recommended Posts

layton1985

Hi,

My wipers park about 8" from the bottom of the windscreen, they do the full cycle go right to the bottom then come back up 8" and park!

I have tried another known working relay from another 205 gti but that did the same thing, has anyone else had this problem before?

Sounds like the arm isn't positioned correctly on the motor if they're giving the screen a full sweep but parking in the wrong place.

They go right to the bottom of the screen though but then come back up and stop, if I re adjusted them to stay at the bottom they would come off the bottom of the windscreen and onto the scuttle, damaging the blades and the motor, I can't sus it out

adjust it on the motor not the spindles.

I don't know what you mean adjust them on the motor, basically they go across the windscreen then back down try to go onto the scuttle then back up the windscreen too far and park there, it's doing my head in, it's such a strange thing to happen.

The linkage is splined to the motor itself. If it's in the wrong place on the motor then it won't stop in the right place.

I understand that but what is happening is it goes past the bottom of the windscreen then bck up to park, so if I adjusted them on the splines (either way on the wipers or motor both results are the same) then when they are in motion they will wipe the bonet then park at the bottom, i just can't understand why they go to the bottom then back up and park

hmm i think i may know what you mean now????? I am just trying in my head to figure out how it actually works, the motor doesn't wind forwards then backwards, it does a full revolution which would mean if the motor splines are out it will start and stop in the wrong position hence what's going on, feel a bit daft, thanks guys.

No point trying to work it out in your head, just take the scuttle panel off and look at how the linkage is set up and it'll make sense to you then. From my memory - and I'm going back many, many years - you disconnect the linkage from the back of the motor (whilst the motor is in it's rested position), then move the linkage so that it moves to it's farthest position with the short bits (connected to the spindles) pointing towards the drivers side, the reconnect the linkage to the motor. Hard to explain but obvious when you play with it. The whole linkage moves from side to side so you are looking to set it at it's farthest point of travel on the side that will point the wipers at the passenger side. Once that's set you can then set the wiper arms at the correct position.

If you want to try and picture it mentally, think of the wheels on a steam train and how they are connected. The wheels rotate but are connected by bits that move more or less laterally, back and forth. That's basically what you'll see when you look at the wiper linkage. Think of the motor as one wheel and the wiper spindles as tge other wheel, with the linkage moving side to side.
