Thanks WP,

Where do i measure from/to for the 137mm? And do i just do it with digi calipers?

they will suffice if they are of reasonable quality.

Yeah glad i took head off rather than use engine, so i get a new HG.

Will they tell me how much they've taken off when skimming and that will determine what gasket i buy?

yep.

Great WP, that's enough to get me going.

Thanks!

WP, in the second last pic above, have i correctly photo'd the tab/marker i've heard read about that indicates the maximum depth the head can be skimmed down to? (throughout it's life)

i'm a wee bit confused by the link you posted btw, would my measurement be ok doing it at the flywheel end, from the face of the head to the the highest point near the number "2" on my last pic?

Thanks for your help as always, i'm way out my depth here.

I'm just thinking, the 137 +/- 0.05mm must be between two "machined" faces to be so precise, therefore must be between the face that fixes to the block and the machined face at the cam side?

so if i want to measure it myself i would need to take off the two sections that sit on top of the head/cams...... the bits the cam covers fix to?

It would be clearer if i had the head in front of me with a ruler.

Think i best just gather the info and let the engine shop dismantle and reassemble it to save me giving duff info.

Got the head in to the engine shop today.

What a place, real old school, looked like he had some diesel train engines in there as well as 50+ other engines.

He said he'll pressure test head, and also pointed out that the head/engine must have been blowing between two cylinders, and showed me why, but he'll sort it out on the skim.

I asked about checking the valves for straightness, he said any bent valves will show up when he faces them.

Does that sound about right?

He'll check everything over and renew/provide all top end gaskets/seals, and new head bolts.

He had most of the prices in his book as someone else phoned him last week for the same work.

Should have it back middle of next week due to holiday weekend.

The machine shop phoned to say they were struggling to get a HG from their suppliers, i agreed to source it, and anything else needed.

Looking at P1off site, would this be everything i'd need? Stem seals, bolts, HG etc?

HG are very easy to source, I use a local engine remanufacturers in Cardiff. http://www.southwalespistons.com/

That is of course if I don't use the o.e gasket.

How much have they needed to take off the head?

Cheers WP, just looking and i can get stem seals and bolts from GSF.

He hasn't done it yet, but i said i thought pug do a 1.2 and a 1.4 HG, he mumbled something about how many thou they equated to and said he always fits the thickest gaskets available.

Would i be best waiting to find out how much needs to be taken off? Or order the 1.4 from pug?

If its a 1.4 you need I'd get in touch with SWP and order a Payen 1.4mm gasket, would be better safe than sorry, might as well get the cam seals and the manifold gaskets and bolts from them in one go too.

Never needed stuff posting from them though so don't know how good they are at that, but always had stuff the same day or next working day at the most as they use Ferraris Piston Services like most companies, and there's a branch about 3 miles away in Town.

(FPS are a trade only supplier, would imagine your engine guy has an account with them as well surely?!)

Personally I used the o.e.m 1.2mm unit but had my pistons machined so there's an extra 1 mm of clearance.

o.e stem seals are £1.48 each.

Thanks WP i'll give them a call tomorrow and see what they say. I know a few mechanics with garages if they won't sell to joe public.

FPS don't sell to garages, they supply the trade outlets, i.e motorfactors etc.

South Wales pistons will sell to anyone :)

WP, 8 thou has came off my head.

I spoke to the guy and organised a full head gasket kit with a 1.4 thick gasket.

He said there would also be a little bit clearance gained with the valves being machined.

Is that all ok?
