In Search Of Some Forged Pistons

Recommended Posts

opticaltrigger

Hi there,

Geting ready to bolt the engine in the turbo project car back together now and we need to replace the pistons. ( XU9JA ).

Can anybody recomend some forged pistons with the standard compression and where they might be got.

I saw some Wossner ones on ebay but they were 12.5:1 units and also I realy dont know much about them.

All the very best

O.T.

You could always try IAPEL if the wounds have healed.

be wary, the last set of those I got for that engine needed machining as the C/R was far too high, mind that was 7 odd years ago

I'd go either JE or Omega

Hi Miles,

Thanks for the tip.I did email them on it but as yet no reply.

Do you know if Omega stock the standard compression or if they would need making ?..I would rather use some from the UK if possible.

Anyway thanks again and all the best

Don't you want something around 8.5:1 if it's a turbo?

It uses a decompression plate Pete and very reworked chambers. All up it comes in at 8.05:1.

Hi all,

Well I really am strugeling with this one.I called Omega up and despite having a great chat with them the answer was that the world has changed now and unless I would like 20 sets it's a no go.

Iapel just dont seem to want to talk to me and Im now pinning all my hopes on JE.I did find these guys though http://www.cambridgemotorsport.com/Custom-Bespoke-Pistons?gclid=COH-1NaA2MQCFWEOwwod-40Arg who Im going to call tomorow with a look at getting some JE units hopefully.

I even thought about using Wossner ones at 12.5:1 if it were possible to machine them down but, one I dont know if it's possible as I dont know how much meat is in the crown and two I think it's just nasty. And to boot you dont get a nice dish in the top.

Like the man at Omega said "The world has changed". I honestly thought it would be a straight forward thing but it seems not to be so far so if any of you guys have any other ideas that might put me in the right direction I would love to hear it.Perhaps if anyone knows something that could help out it would be great.

For now I will try the above but after that who knows.

Anyway all the best guys

O.T.

Well, I called up JE today and the definitive answer is that "No you cant" unless you want them made.

However there is some saving grace in it all.

After having a great conversation today the answer (and it's a nice one) is to use MI16 turbo pistons they come in the correct compression hieght and have a 22mm pin with a similar dish in the crown, although the small ends of the rods may need narowing a little.

Feeling a little better at the moment

Just bush your 8V rods to 22mm whilst you're getting them close & honed and balanced, just use Mi16 rods.

Thanks Pete,

We were having a chat about this today.

While looking at the mi16 turbo pistons from Wossner I also noticed that they sell a set of rods for it to.

Is this what you had in mind Pete or do any of you guys have any other ideas for a rod and piston combo which would sort this problem out for us.The thinking really is that well in for a penny,in for a pound at this stage.

I looked at Carrillo as I'm more familiar with them but the price can be eye watering. If anyone has experience with the Wossner products it would be great to hear what you think on it.

Here are the links to the Wossner rods and pistons that I found, just in case I have something wrong.

Just to recap, this is for hanging on to a 1.9 8v (XU9JA) crankshaft in our turbo 8v project.

Any help with this guys would be greatly appriciated.

All the best

Support from the last set of rings I needed from Wossner's (Well UK dist) was around 8 weeks as the first set supplied was wrong but the range they have looks good, I've got to get some T16 pistons for a engine over the coming weeks for the same reason as £800 on some pistons and £800+ on Rods is out of budget but as we know you pay for what you get and comparing them to the JE or CP ones is no comparison

The cost of good rod bolts, reconditioning and bushing will be equivalent to a new set of entry level rods. Depending on how much hp you intend, how much invested and how deep are your pockets, determines whether you go Carillo or not. You'll always be able to on-sell the Carillos when the rest of the engine blows up!

I cannot understand why you would need forged pistons and steel rods whilst still using a de compression plate.

I have just finished a 1900 8v turbo car, 252bhp, low comp via chambered head and machined standard pistons, roller bearing GT25 and all the good guy bits to go with it.

I'm planing on removing it Tom for this latest rebuild.

I havent really done the calculation properly yet but I think it will still come out south of 9.0:1 without it

Anyway, the 8v turbo car you just did sounds interesting. What RPM did it hit the 252 at and what did your static c.r. end up at .?

All the best
