Timing Belt Too Tight?!

Recommended Posts

idoari

Hi, i just did a timing belt replacement in 1992 205 gti 1.6 engine. i replaced the water pump and tentioner as well and when i start the engine the first time a see a smoke coming up from the timing belt area and a strong smell of burning rubber. i turn the engine off and remove the upper timing belt cover and touch the belt - IT WAS REALLY HOT! and most of the marking on the back of it seem to rub off.

i remove all the timing covers to see if something rubbing with the belt and the only contact is with tentioner.

from what i understand the tention in the tentioner is automatic because the spring housing and the spring pusheing the tentioner bracket that pushes the roller to the correct tension.

what is the problem?
