Who Said Diesels Were s*it?

Recommended Posts

Still maintain they are. For me power is on par with what it feels like, an engine needs to rev and behave like I want it too whereas diesels just don't. There is no excitement.

Although I'm sure it's quick.

Great figures for sure, and fair play to the guy for havng a go at something different, I won't detract from that, but there are 2 big issues for me.

First one is power delivery. It goes from something like 50bhp to 190bhp within 1000rpm. I know from 1st hand experience that on road tyres you just won't be able to put that down on the floor.

Second one is common to all these tuned XUD's, and thats the bloody horrendous black smoke spewing out of the back and permanently covering the rear of the car in black sh1t.

Im not entirely sure if these super high power XU diesels, they seem to last 5mins then brake! Building mine to be reliable with only a mild tune.

Loads of excitement from my tuned diesel mate, I find it more or less the same to drive as my 6 engine.

It's a late spooling turbo and revs up to 5.5/6k, far quicker than my 6 engine. Very controllable and economical.

Black smoke out the back is good for annoying cyclists  , but again you can control that with your foot. Doesn't have to be smokey all the time.

Mines clean on boost with no smoke out the back at the moment.

The main reason why people do it, is for cheap power.

"cheap power" how much was that turbo, fuel pump from Sweden, exhaust manifold etc??

I do appreciate it as an exercise in seeing what they will fo, but itll never be a performance engine.

Well that engines an exception.

I should of said getting power out of a standard-ish engine isn't hard and relatively cheap compared to a petrol engine

Still diesels are crap. The only thing diesel for me is company vehicles. The VR6 golf mk2 golf I've just purchased doesn't feel that exciting. It's north of 200 with more torque than hp but it's no match for a quick revving 4 pot tuned NA engine.

Even my old 360hp/400lbft 2dr Impreza is not a patch on the buzz from ragging my Rallye. Yes normally aspirated tuning is expensive but the rewards are worth every penny.

Also the smoke from XUD's is embarrassing!

I'd agree with that statement to a degree. I've run diesels as company cars for 13 years and the Skoda is the first "performance" diesel I've had.

Plenty fast enough for me and does what I need plus lower P11D tax which is a nice bonus.

Revs pretty well for a derv powered car but has a stupid sound generator to make it "sound" like a petrol in sport mode. Whoever came up with that needs shooting.

Not on the same planet as a 205 for fun.

I ran a 90 hp 167000 miles bora as my daily while the 205 went its overhaul and been one of the most reliable and fun cars I've ever owned. Wanted for nothing.

You have to work hard to use every ounce of power and read the the road ahead constantly. Just floor it through bends and roundabouts was hilarious. Got pulled in that not the 205 ffs!

Liked it so much swapped my 330 for a pd130 and already having more of a laugh instantly.

It's when you get these serious 'hot hatch' diesels claiming to be as good as a petrol equivalent that it gets a bit silly.

I drove the petrol vrs back to back with my diesel and there's not a lot in it TBH - does that make the diesel very good or the petrol pretty poor?

Diesels absolutely have their place and can be very quick indeed, although a very different type of fast as we all know. They'll never be what a exciting petrol is though, driving my brothers remapped Golf GT TDI back to back with my goodwood high lights this quite well.

The smoke can be amusing until it attracts Polis attention. Had a Honda that smoked badly on boost, bad enough that you could hide the cars behind from view. Went bang not long after.

I've had 5 diesels but have never used the word "exciting" when describing any of them. 2 of them were very quick, not exciting.
