1.9 Gti Driveshafts

Recommended Posts

I ve got a 1,9 drive shaft (the short one) that has got a split cv boot, i read somewhere that you can change the boot by removing the removing the outer cv joint by knocking it whislt angled down? Is this true as in haynes is says you have to remove the inner cv joint? Which seems to be a pain.

Has any one used the above method and how did you go about doing it any tips or tricks?

If it's a proper 1.9 shaft, the outer CV is a spline fit and can be removed by knocking it off with a few firm taps with a suitable lump hammer.

Any way of telling if it is a splined. when you pull the CV back and fourth you feel a little play, im guessing that all 1.9 shafts are the same and its the 1.6 that where 1 piece?

when you hit it with the hammer do you rotate the CV joint to avoid hitting it it the same place.

It'll be a 6 ball type CV if it's a splined 1.9 type - there's some lousy reconditioned ones that are a 3 ball tripod design like base models

Normally they just need a couple of firm knocks and don't need to worry about rotating, but sometimes the can be more stubborn and if so, turning them whilst tapping should get it off and minimise damage worries.

look at the rear of the CV joint under the boot, 1.9 should be a 6 ball and cage, 1.6 and base models are a single piece tripod joint without any removable parts.

one swift thump should remove it, its only a small snap ring that the CV needs to be knocked over.

One swift hit later and the joint came off. One thing I did notice, when hitting the cv it shouldn't be inclined fully down only a little bit and it comes of easy peasy.
