Correct Speedo Cable For Turbo Diesel ?

Recommended Posts

mmatthej1

Just wonder if anyone knows whether 1.8 TD requires its own, special speedo cable or is it (I hope) maybe same as any other 205 model?

(eg. I've been told it is same as GTI - also wonder if it would be same as standard diesel?)

Thanks for any advice!

AFAIK it's the same cable as GTi and NAD models.

Certainly Servicebox doesn't list a different cable for TD models, just LHD (890mm) and RHD (1100mm) lengths.

It should be the same for any 205 with a BE box, I'm unsure about basemodels (tu) with the MA, its been a long time since i owned one. The only thing is there are 2-3 different lengths. I always get the longest, makes routing the cable easier, try and protect it from the heat of the exhaust the best you can.

Good info, many thanks!

(Btw, is 'NAD' = 'Normally Aspirated Diesel')

Yes, NAD as in N/A diesel.

I have now extracted the old INNER cable, which was twisted and nearly broken at the top end - yes, I think it is the 1100mm length.

Just wonder if it is possible to now get a replacement INNER and feed it through?

(I don't fancy getting the outer taken out, as it is poor access to aspects such as the bulkhead grommet)

At the speedo-end, the cable ends with a metal piece but then there is a white plastic section, clipped on to the back of the instrument - is this normally a seperate piece or should it all be in one piece, cable+white plastic fitting, I wonder?

As ever, any thoughts & guidance will be appreciated!

Honestly, just replace the cable complete.

If you're trying to thread a new inner in then you've already done most of the work removing the various bits to get access. Even on TD models access to swap the cable isn't that bad, although granted it is more difficult than most 205 models.

Not one that, but I would hazard a guess that the outer isn't in great condition any more as the inner will likely have worn it over the years and something must have generated enough resistance to result in the cable snapping.

Hum, you may have a point! I have got it 'undone' at both ends, so I suppose it's "only" the recalcitrant grommet that I would have to dislodge/refit in the bulkhead - next step is to acquire a replacement cable!

Will report on how it goes, asap.

Finally got a replacement cable - have got the bulkhead grommet out & removed old cable, new one now approximately in position, next will be to attach to gearbox, then speedo, in that order I think...............
