Xe Engine Swap

Recommended Posts

jackmorris

Hi all, first time posting so be gentle! Currently driving a lovely G reg 1.0L XE which is extremely clean and brilliant as my everyday driver. However I need more go from it! I was originally planning on converting it to full gti spec to create a sleeper, however I've decided that it just isn't what I want to do with it plus it would have been far too much work. So I want to keep it TU and carb'd and after searching around it would seem an xs engine is the way to go. As I've never done any major project style work on cars before other than basic stuff I just wanted to know what exactly do I need to do this? Obviously I'll need to find an xs engine/gearbox but can anyone provide a list of what else I will need? what loom would I be able to use?

As I've said I have searched around without finding what I was really looking for but if i missed some golden thread please feel free to redirect me!

This has been covered a million times, you're not searching hard enough

Wiring is the same minus rev counter wire 112

Driveshafts same

Exhaust manifold different

Engine mounts the same

Use the 1.4 downpipe as it longer

On a G-plate it should be fine Dan - wing mount changed to the normal XU/XUD one when the TU engine was introduced in '88 :)

thats a registration date Ash, not a build date. I have had a 88/89 F plate with the early wing mount :)

I'm fairly sure it is the later style engine mount but i will get a pic as soon as i can. With regards to the speedo, would i be able to continue using my current one? Currently just a speedometer and basic warning lights with no rev counter. Sorry im a complete newbie to wiring so apologies if I sound a tad simple.

Here is a pic of the engine mount, looks to me like the later mount if i'm not mistaken. Please excuse the slight corrosion......

Yeah that's fine - AFAIK all TU engine models had the later mount.

It's the earlier XY series engine that uses the different mount, like so:

Cool thanks.

Interesting one that, cant recall ever seeing that layout before!

Guess i'll have to start looking for a complete xs engine and gearbox then. Little confused, are passengers allowed to post wanted ads? I know theres no posting topics in for sale but i thought i read something about wanted ads being different....
