No Lights, Wiring Help Needed

Recommended Posts

Malc

Was out in my 205 last night all working well, Drove home into the garage with lights on, switched them off and the car, all fine. Went to take the car out tonight and no lights (side, headlamps or tail, no dash lights). Obviously checked the fuse and fine, power both sides, checked the light switch and I have a live at the switch (thick red wire) then when I turn the switch to put lights on the live goes. Is this normal? I tried to take a feed from the red live wire to others to check as I thought it could be a faulty switch, dash and side lights came on then went off, tried again and nothing. I am guessing that there is either a short or something with the red wire as its losing its live, any ideas?

Its a 1991 phase two if that makes any difference.

BTW When there is a bad (high resistance) connection somewhere due to corrosion or loose contacts or whatever it is normal to measure a voltage when nothing is connected but as soon you turn the switch on the voltage disappears. This is explained by ohms law.

Many thanks for info, simple fix was the red wire in the fuse box, very slightly burnt (obviously due to the bigger bulbs) temporary fix at the moment, will get a new plug and change over

Many thanks, saved a lot of head scratching.
