205 Vs 309 Steering Column

Recommended Posts

What are the differences between the 205 and 309 steering columns? Are they similar but of different lengths? Is the 309 column about an inch longer, yet still mounts to a 205?

my 309 has brackets that attach to the subframe which lowers it down an inch this might be the reason why

Are you talking about the upper or lower columns? AFAIK both are the same anyway. Lower columns vary, splined or square, pas or non pas but I think they are all common to 205s and 309s.

The subframe brackets on a 309 are present on non-GTI 205s too.

I ask because for some reason I think my 205 perhaps has a 309 steering column. I found that because my turn signal stalk wasn't resetting after a turn, and I thought it was the stalk itself that was broke. So I went to replace it with a known good one, and found out that the one I thought was broke was fine. The problem is my steering wheel seems to be a half inch closer to the driver than it should be, and the little catch piece behind the steering wheel just isn't engaging the stalk turn signal cancel inside the stalk. So it seems to me that the upper part of my steering column might be a bit longer than what a 205 needs.

no difference in them, loosen the upper uj clamp and push the wheel down.

make sure it doesnt rub, tighten the clamp up.

Didn't think I'd be able to adjust it like that. Thanks a lot.
