Rear Drum Brake Problem

Recommended Posts

flyfisher

this sounds silly but it's doing my head in. My tubo diesel 205 has developed a brake problem whilst driving some times the foot brake pedal develops excessive travel this lasts a while sometimes a matter of minutes all then returns to normal until next time it's also been noted at the same time hand brake travel also increases and reverts back at same time as foot bake the two seem linked. In say a five mile journey this might happen two or three times. First thoughts were master cylinder. But pedal stops short of floor and you still have some brake same with hand brake just excessive travel anyone got any idears as this sounds stupid. But as said doing my head in thanks peter

There's a self adjust link in the drums to tweek the travel as the shoes wear.

If one side was slipping and then re-adjusting it might give that strange brake feeling?

Might be worth a look to rule it out.

could be cracked a drum that expands at a certain point which is why it only happens now and again

The later brake linings are probe to separating from the backing causing similar symptoms can also cause it to lock up.

The only way you'll know is by getting the drum off, like you said unlikely to be a hydraulic issue as that shouldn't effect the hand brake.

I have had this on a base model and it was the passenger side adjuster that was slipping.

That was the Bendix toothed cam type not the Girling serrated wheel type.
