Noisy Starter Motor/ Crunch Into Reverse.

Hi all. I have an issue on my recently fitted mi16 to 1.6 reverse under fifth gearbox.

When engaging reverse the gears crunch but it is all good in all forward gears. The starter is noisy when it engages too. Starter is slimline 306 unit and is known to be good. Incidentally, the speedo is not working either! All related or different issues? Cheers

All symptoms point to loose gearbox bolts but i doubt its that if you only just put it in, as for the speedo you could have dislodged or broke the plastic drive gear when you popped in the off side driveshaft.

How recently was it fitted? If it was OK to start with and then the problems developed check the gearbox is still tightly bolted to the engine.

I have checked the gearbox bolts and there all tight. I suspected a bent linkage bar maybe?

That wont cause it, check the oil level and the adjustment of the clutch, however there is no synchro on reverse gear, so there's not a lot you can do.

 

 

Speedo not working is usually the cable not fitted properly at either end or damaged drive gears.

Ok thanks guys. It's the last few niggles to sort out before mot time. She's almost on the road. Will have a good look over it tomorrow and let you know if I get anywhere. Cheers all
