Engine Cooling Fan Problem

Recommended Posts

Can anyone help with a diagnosis on this please?

Standard unmodified 1.6 GTI - fan doesn't come on.

I've disconnected the (3 pin) thermoswitch and bridged the contacts. Fan doesn't start. Unplugged fan lead from its connector (the grey one behind the n/s headlight). Multimeter shows 12V on the female side of that connector but fan doesn't work when plugged back in. Same result from bridging contacts on the brown test plug. But the fan works every time if I connect it direct to the battery.

Any ideas of what else to look for would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had a similar issue, problem was one of the connectors, should have had two cables connected to it but one of the cables had broken away from the connector, didn't realise until I started following the wiring diagram.

Soldered the broken wire into the existing wire and it all worked again.

Thanks welshpug, you were right. It was a dodgy connection on the earth wire where it plugs in near the headlight. Cleaned up the contacts and back to normal again.
